CATANIA – The Coast Guard rescued a Russian seafarer, who injured his hand while on board a Turkish ship bound for Malta. It happened yesterday. The injured person is a crew member of a container ship, Macau. His hand wouldn’t stop bleeding.






The request for assistance was received at the Operations Center of the General Command of the Port Authorities at around 4.45pm. An intervention was needed over 100 nautical miles south-east of the city of Catania. The Maritime Directorate immediately took over the coordination of the operations.

The operation

After consulting the Italian Radio Medical Center (CIRM), the body responsible for assisting naval units in navigation. The rescue was carried out from the Catania aircraft base via the Coast Guard AW139 helicopter, named Nemo 11-07.

The intervention concluded successfully around 7.50 pm, when the injured seafarer was picked up and the Nemo 11-07 helicopter transported the injured man to the Coast Guard aircraft base in Catania. From here it was subsequently transferred by ambulance 118 to the “San Marco” hospital.
