“Another suicide in Italian prisons. We are at 44. It happened this morning around 11.30 in the prison of Novara. The prison police officers found a 20-year-old prisoner dead hanging in his cell. alarm, but for the young man, an Algerian born in 2004, there was nothing left to do. He used a rudimentary noose.” This was reported by the general secretary of Osapp (Autonomous Penitentiary Police Trade Union Organisation) Leo Beneduci: “It is the 44th suicide in prison in less than six months. It is a tragic and significant fact. Unacceptable data, just as the situation they are experiencing is unacceptable. the inmates and prison officers in Italian prisons. The government must finally take note of the profound inability of the current administration leaders to manage this type of emergency. And take note that special and extraordinary measures are needed to ensure that prisons go back to being that way that the Constitution says: that is, safeguards of legality and safety. The prison administration cannot be managed by those who until yesterday were a magistrate. It cannot be managed through the benefits given to magistrates at the end of their career managers capable of organizing. And so far the magistrates at the end of their careers have shown that they are not able to manage the situation”, concludes Beneduci.
