Autonomy, tensions in the South after the green light (also within FdI)

Wednesday morning ended with the approval of the law establishing Differentiated Autonomy, the flag measure of the League, a turbulent parliamentary week. The political conflict, however, remains very heated and promises to have consequences. Between majority and opposition, naturally, but also within the center-right itself.

Doubts in the center-right

In suffering are – openly, albeit with relative distinctions – the administrators and elected representatives of Forza Italia al Sud: I harshly criticize the Calabrian governor Eyed, some deputies deserted the vote, claiming it, while the Sicilian president, Schifani, he distances himself. But she’s inside FdI that a malaise that has not yet emerged would spread. The leaders throw water on the fire: «Our people know the law they approved and therefore they know how false the story is that it is splitting the country. It’s all propaganda.” However to worry i Southern Melonians and those with shorter CVs in matchare the political and media effects of the provision: «If the theory that with Autonomy less money will reach the South passes, we risk paying dearly for the League’s law».

The common commitment of minority forces

On the other hand the measure further compacts them oppositions, who have already found themselves united against the premiership. The common commitment of minority forcesincluding a very determined one Italy alive, is to collect signatures for a repeal referendum. The group leaders of M5S Stefano Patuanelli and Francesco Silvestri they also make another move: they write to the President of the Republic asking him to “evaluate the opportunity to exercise his constitutional prerogative”, to “not promulgate the law” and send it back to the Chambers.
Open battle, then inside i national borders. But not only. A critical opinion on the Italian law is contained in a document made public, even before it reached final approval, by Brussels: «The devolution of further competences to the Italian Regions entails risks for cohesion and public finances» we read in the Commission’s Country report, dedicated to Italy. “Europe is not always right”, replies the League.

Tajani: «The right reform, the concerns of the south are legitimate»

The watchword throughout the majority is to hold the line. The center-right points the finger at “the contradictions of the left”, attacking above all Stefano Bonaccini, the president of the Democratic Party of Emilia-Romagna who had signed the pre-agreement on Autonomy. Nello Musumeci, former president of Sicily, now a minister, urges southern administrators to take “their responsibilities” thus: “The South must stop crying”. The secretary of FI, Antonio Tajani, instead tries to keep the two positions together: «The reform is right, the concerns of the South are legitimate, but they will be dispelled by the application of the agendas to guarantee the South presented by FI». But the most evident split is precisely territorial: if the presidents of Veneto and Lombardy are ready to start negotiations with the government for Autonomy, five Regions, mostly from the South (Campania in the front row), are preparing the appeal to the Consulta.
