On Friday 21 June at 8.00 pm at the Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo in Modica the painting “The Adoration of the Magi” will be presented, recently restored and returned to the mother church.

Created in 1739 by Domenico La Bruna, it represents one of the most refined artistic works of the Modican and Sicilian eighteenth century. The restoration was necessary due to the precarious conservation conditions which risked causing serious damage to the work. This restoration is part of a broader project for the conservation of cultural heritage. In fact, the work was kept in the Church of S. Maria del Soccorso, which had been closed for decades due to the risk of collapse.

It was a commitment of the parish, assisted by the Petra Mazara and La via delle Collegiate Associations, to safeguard and preserve the paintings which had long been moved to the mother church. In this context, we wanted to do more by including them in a process of cultural valorization with the opening, in recent months, of an exhibition dedicated to the Jesuits in the Chapter Hall of the mother church. Hence the restoration through synergistic work between the parish, the Sicily Region and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage of Ragusa. Therefore, months later, the work, now restored to its former splendor, has returned to the mother church.

During the presentation, Dr. Gaetana Ascenzo will speak and will illustrate the restoration intervention, Prof. Maria Terranova who will report the history of the painting and its characteristics and the Parish Priest Don Giuseppe Stella.

“Together with the parish and the Ass. Petra Mazara, say the Association La via delle Collegiate, we continue to protect and responsibly safeguard the historical and artistic heritage that comes to us from our fathers. A commitment that is achieved with the synergistic work of everyone and which has the result of creating opportunities for the city such as the recent opening of the “Ad maiorem Dei” exhibition where the Adoration of the Magi will have a central role to show the numerous tourists and visitors the great religious heritage of the City of Modica.”
