4.15pm – Pecco Bagnaia is the man to beat on Friday in Assen. The three-time world champion in fact imposed himself both this morning and today, in the decisive session for the assignment of the 10 places in Q2. Vinales tried to respond and in the end he finished second but collecting just 65 thousandths from Bagnaia, with Marc Marquez instead finishing 6th behind Martìn. Closing the virtual front row with his 3rd time is Alex Marquez, while Aleix Espargarò was the protagonist of a fall just as he was marking the red helmets. At least he ended the day in an excellent 4th position.
Brad Binder is the first rider in the standings with his 7th time ahead of Enea Bastianini, who fell at the end of qualifying just when it seemed he could do better. The top ten is closed by Raul Fernandez and Franco Morbidelli, who grabs the coveted Q2 right at the end, leaving out Fabio Quartararo and Marco Bezzecchi, only 12th.
16:07 – The checkered flag waves on the session, with Bagnaia remaining the leader ahead of Vinales and Alex Marquez.
16:06 – Bad flight for Aleix Espargarò, who however appears to have been unharmed.
16:05 – Lots of red helmets on the track, the standings will change soon. Vinales is getting closer to Bagnaia but remains second by 65 thousandths.
4.03pm – The ranking changes a lot with Marquez placing himself in 5th position ahead of Binder and Bastianini. Lots of red helmets are arriving!
4.00pm – Quartararo is now up to 6th position, while Alex Rins is 9th. Aleix Espargarò knows he can do something special in Assen and now climbs up to 3rd position.
15:59 – Just 7 minutes to go in this FP2, now all the riders enter the track with a new soft tyre for the time attack.
3.58pm – Fabio Di Giannantonio is improving now, he is 10th and obviously at risk for passage to Q2.
15:56 – Many riders return to the pits, while Joan Mir makes a mistake with his Honda and his FP2 probably ends here.
3.54pm – Bagnaia pushes again and lowers the benchmark, stopping the clock in 1’31’340, two tenths better than Vinales. Now it’s Jorge Martìn’s turn, who is pushing in the first sectors.
15:53 - Vinales attacks decisively and laps in 1’31’561, with Bagnaia now second on Bastianini. Marc Marquez 4th on Quartararo, who improves! A incandescent phase of this FP2. Acosta moves up to 5th position now.
3.50pm – The red helmets begin to flock, with Fernandez moving up to 5th position and Quartararo finishing the first attempt in 9th position.
15:49 – The time attack carousel begins, here is the current ranking which however is destined to be revolutionized.
15:47 – There are about 18 minutes to go until the checkered flag, which means that the riders will soon be back on track on new tyres for the real time attack. At that point we will be able to really understand the level of the bikes.
15:45 – Time cancelled for Vinales, who however is pushing very hard and ends the attempt. He returns to the pits just as he was marking some red helmets, but soon the serious stuff will start.
15:43 – Maverick Vinales climbs into second place, just 31 thousandths behind Bagnaia. The Top Gun will undoubtedly be a tough customer for pole tomorrow.
3.40pm – The big names return to the pits to prepare for the real time attack phase, which will begin in a few minutes.
15:39 – Marc Marquez suddenly climbs the standings and finds himself in second place behind Pecco Bagnaia.
15:38 – Marc Marquez makes his appearance, marking red helmets in the first sectors.
15:37 – Less than 30 minutes to go, so far no driver has played all their cards to secure a place in Q2. The real assault on the clock will begin soon.
15:36 – Fabio Di Giannantonio in third position now, Bagnaia still leading over Martìn and Fabio. Time cancelled for Bastianini, who finds himself in 12th position.
15:35 – No sooner said than done: Bagnaia is the first to lap in 1’31’901! Several riders are improving, including Bastianini who climbs to 8th place.
15:34 – A look at the standings, with the times starting to fall. Soon we will see the first laps under the 1’32 wall. In the meantime, Di Giannantonio’s time is taken away.
15:32 – Bastianini displaces him and takes 4th position now. Fabio Di Giannantonio arrives and displaces him immediately, confirming the speed seen this morning. Fabio is one of the potential riders in Yamaha Pramac for 2025.
3.32pm – Time canceled for Bagnaia due to a cut, while Binder climbs to 4th position.
15:32 – Bastianini closes his lap without improving, while Bagnaia has now launched himself and already has a red helmet in the first sector.
15:30 – Jack Miller continues to suffer, currently only 14th. Bastianini is improving, while Binder now sets the 11th time.
15:26 – Marc Marquez continues to ride but is not improving, while Di Giannantonio is improving now, author of the best time this morning then cancelled due to a very slight track limit error at 17. Fabio enters the top ten with the 8th time.
15:24 – There’s not a lot of activity on the track right now, with several riders stuck in the pits perhaps trying to improve their set-up slightly before launching the real assault on the stopwatch.
3.22pm – Espargarò climbs to 5th position, Aprilia confirms itself as super competitive in Assen. Vinales improves further but remains 3rd.
15:20 – A step forward for Vinales who now climbs to third position behind Bagnaia and Martìn. Aleix Espargarò is also improving, now 12th.
3.18pm – There’s just over 45 minutes to go until the end of the session, let’s take a look at the standings. With Acosta making a nice leap and moving up to 3rd position.
3.17pm – Bagnaia manages to get back in front of everyone, with Vinales who in turn improves and is now second just 4 hundredths behind Pecco. For now it looks like a Ducati Vs Aprilia fight in Assen, with Acosta who is 8th and Quartararo who is currently 10th.
3.16pm – Pecco runs strong but doesn’t improve. In any case Bagnaia is confirming that he has an excellent pace, he is always at the top.
15:15 – Bagnaia is also pushing, now in second but gets a red helmet in the second sector.
3.13pm – Very good Bastianini, who is now seventh, as both Alex and Marc Marquez continue to lap, scoring red helmets.
15:12 – Immediate response from Jorge Martìn, who improves on the day’s best by lapping in 1’32’326. Perhaps Jorge has resolved the set-up problems that have conditioned him this morning.
3.11pm – Marc Marquez responds and laps in 1’32’644, Bagnaia is now 3rd.
15:09 – Alex Marquez and his brother Marc are in front, getting close to the best references of the morning. Shortly after, Raul Fernandez arrives and places himself in front of everyone. Raul is really in form at Assen.
3.09pm – Jorge Martìn starts well and gets ahead of everyone, but we are still running slower times than those seen this morning.
3.07pm – Even at the start of this session, Alex Marquez immediately gets behind his brother Marc.
15:05 – Green light, FP2 begins at Assen.
3.02pm – This morning the best was Pecco Bagnaia, who for the first time in his MotoGP career finished an FP1 ahead of everyone.
15:02 – The stewards will give the green light to the session in 5 minutes.
3.00pm – Welcome to our LIVE coverage of FP2 MotoGP in Assen, the session that will give 10 riders direct access to tomorrow’s Q2. There will be a small delay in the start of the session due to Joe Roberts’ crash in Moto2.
The Assen weekend began under the sign of Pecco Bagnaia, who beat Marc Marquez this morning in FP1. But it won’t be an exclusive challenge between Ducati riders, because Aprilia and Yamaha have also scratched. Raul Fernandez in fact set the third time ahead of the revived Fabio Quartararo, very effective with an M1 which is certainly performing much better than the other Japanese bike on the grid, i.e. a Honda which sees only 18th and first among the HRC riders in classification.
Aprilia also placed both Vinales and Espargarò at the top, with Maverick 5th ahead of Aleix. It’s a shame about the time taken away from Fabio Di Giannantonio, who had set the best time but had also slightly cut the inside of the 17 causing this demotion to 7th position.
