Economy: EU Commission designates Abruzzo as an Innovation region

(REGFLASH) Pescara, 20 June. – The European Commission has indicated Abruzzo as a Regional Innovation Valley. The designation allows Abruzzo to enter a narrow circle of highly innovative areas identified by the Commission throughout the European territory, called upon in the future to lead innovation processes in support of the priorities indicated by the European Union.

“The growth process of the Region – commented the President of the Regional Council Marco Marsilio – does not seem to concern only the numbers linked to the statistical data on the performance of the economy, and I am referring in particular to the latest positive data on exports and GDP regional, but also by a political recognition by the Commission of a region capable of playing an important part in the European economy. Therefore no longer a marginal area, but a central area in the development and growth processes that the European Union has in mind for its territory. For this reason – concludes the President – the recognition of Region of Innovation must not be read as entry into an exclusive EU club, but certifies the degree of reliability that the Commission gives to Abruzzo’s economic capabilities”.

In this sense, it is the Commission’s intention to bring together all the identified Innovation Regions to address the most important and burning challenges facing the European Union, starting with dependence on fossil fuels, increasing global food security, mastering digital transformation ( including cybersecurity), improve healthcare and achieve circularity.

“The results that this region is obtaining on the economic front – comments the councilor for Productive Activities Tiziana Magnacca – completely change the role that it has so far held at the national level: from a leading region to a leading region within a context of growth and development that always sees Abruzzo as a protagonist. The positive export data (+12.4%) and regional GDP (+1.4%) well above the national average – continues Magnacca – are evidence that the industrial policy choices made so far are the result of an idea of development that looks at the concrete, thus avoiding dangerous ideological choices”.
