Edison Next transforms the city

Trieste19 June 2024 – Yesterday, in the prestigious Salotto Azzurro, the press conference entitled “Public lighting: the public-private partnership between the Municipality and Edison Next for a smart and sustainable city”. During the event, the mayor Roberto Dipiazza, the municipal councilor for Project Financing Everest Bertoli, Raffaele Bonardi, Business to Government Director of Edison Next, and Domenico Cervelli, North-East Business to Government Area Director of Edison Next, illustrated the details of the new project for the energy and technological requalification of public lighting in Trieste.

A project for a more sustainable city

Mayor Roberto Dipiazza opened the conference with a warm welcome: “Welcome to Trieste, I believe that the Edison group needs no introduction. My desire is to further improve the city and, thanks to the redevelopment of public lighting, to also increase safety. I therefore wish you good work.” The main objective of the project is improve city safety through more efficient and technologically advanced public lighting.

Vision of a smart city

The municipal councilor Everest Bertoli emphasized the importance of this project as the second step of the City Administration’s vision for the regeneration of the city’s technology park. “I would like to point out that we are not talking exclusively about public lighting but about the desire to transform Trieste into one of the first smart cities in Italy. Naturally, energy saving is very important, not only for the municipality’s coffers but because these savings will allow us to generate resources to reinvest in other sectors such as social services, schools, roads.”

Partnership with Edison Next

Edison Next, a company of the Edison Group, will begin providing energy redevelopment, technological, management and maintenance services for public lighting in Trieste from July 1st. Raffaele Bonardi, Business to Government Director of Edison Next, said: “Edison Next is committed to the energy requalification of public lighting in 300 Italian cities. Today we are happy to also support Trieste, strengthening our commitment to accompanying cities and territories on their path to decarbonisation and sustainability.”

Energy and environmental benefits

The project foresees annual energy savings of over 70% compared to 2023, with a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 3,900 tons per year. The redevelopment interventions will include the installation of over 20,000 LED light points and the integration of 400 new light points, as well as adaptive lighting and remote control systems.

A more interconnected city

In addition to energy improvements, the project aims to create a more interconnected and technologically advanced city. Systems will be installed video surveillance and license plate reading, air quality control units, weather detection stations, a smart parking system, wi-fi hot-spots, and charging stations for electric vehicles.

Enhancement of street furniture

The project also includes significant interventions for the enhancement of Trieste’s street furniture. Piazza Unità d’Italia and the Castle of San Giusto they will be enhanced with architectural lighting interventions, through the installation of 470 dedicated projectors for artistic and architectural lighting projects.
