Differentiated Autonomy, Catanzaro: risk of division of the country

The text of the law on differentiated autonomy, supported by the Meloni government and recently approved by the Chamber of Deputies, raises strong concerns among the representatives of the Democratic Party in Sicily. Michele Catanzaro, group leader of the Democratic Party in the Sicilian Regional Assembly, expressed his opposition to the legislation, stating that “it will increase territorial disparities, further penalizing the Regions that are already struggling to keep pace with the more developed areas of the country, and among these Sicily will pay the highest price.”

Catanzaro argues that the economic and social divide exacerbated by this law could compromise national unity and social cohesion, two fundamental pillars for the country’s stability. According to the leader of the Democratic Party, Sicily, already dealing with numerous economic and social challenges, would see its difficulties increase due to legislation that further favors the richer and more developed regions.

To counteract the entry into force of the law, Catanzaro announced the intention of the Sicilian Democratic Party to start a collection of signatures to request a repeal referendum. “Now our commitment will be to collect signatures to ask for a repealing referendum,” declared Catanzaro. The group leader also underlined the importance of an information and awareness campaign: “We will carry out an information and awareness campaign so that all Italians understand the serious consequences that this law could have on the future of our country.”

The Sicilian Democratic Party’s initiative aims to mobilize public opinion and put pressure on the government to review legislation which, according to its critics, risks splitting Italy in two, dividing rather than uniting. The collection of signatures and the information campaign will be crucial tools to inform citizens and to try to block a law considered harmful to the unity and cohesion of the country.
