Maavi and shared tables: “There must be a critical mass”

Working with shared tables to search for common lines. It’s this one, second Enrica Montanucci, president of Maavi, the most productive strategic line to obtain results. Starting from the Ryanair case, which recalls the Antitrust decision in favor of the carrier. “It’s about – comments Montanucci – sitting down – and I mean all the associations – to ask the government to legislate. If we correct the Tourism Code and review the rules for those flying in our country, as done in France, Germany and Spain, we can have a different role, rather than staying silent and letting others decide.” The president is always combative, outspoken, even when she states that the Antitrust’s position towards Ryanair was “embarrassing”.

Towards the European Parliament

A Guida Viaggi assures that it will be there in these very days a meeting with Caramanna (Gianluca Caramanna, Productive Activities, Commerce and Tourism, Chamber of Deputies) for direct intervention at government level. From the Peschici convention the president accepted the invitation to intervene and “we are working with shared tables to look for common lines. There are situations to be resolved and it is not just the relationship with the airlines, a matter on which action must be taken by going directly to the Transport Commission – he underlines -. We must also intervene on Directive”. Among the topics under observation, in addition to carriers and the revision of the Tourism Code, the eternal theme of illegal constructionwith the need to “vary the fine, currently negligible, to increase it to 50 thousand euros also including the criminal sanction”, he warns.

Price increases yes, but it is exaggerated

After strong advanced booking, the season’s trend is now discontinuous, according to Montanucci. “We witness very strong increases, in particular by accommodation facilities. I understand the increase in prices, but there is an exaggeration – he observes – with tariffs doubled compared to three years ago”. And he gives an example: 15 days in three in Sardinia for 11 thousand euros “is madness”. Here too the recipe is the one already proposed: “It can be resolved through dialogue and meeting the hoteliers”. Then a reflection on the commercial practices for selling packages: “If at the beginning of the season you come out with high rates and then follows a bombardment of offers from the agencies, which turns into a cut in commission points, that’s not good. Let’s sit around a table and talk about it to avoid mistakes next season.”

There is a lack of respect for the supply chain

According to him, there is still a lack of “respect for the supply chain”, he declares. “Considering that 88-90% of tourist packages pass through trade, this means that we should have an important weight in strategies, instead we live in absolute passivity with respect to pricing. Marginality is the crux of the dispute.” Then he goes on to explain that “we need to look in perspective, asking ourselves, between now and the next five years, who will be left standing”. Finally, a word about Faro Group: “We have seen good growth in agencies. There are 700 of them and the best ones have gone from 180 to 320”. Regarding the famous 39 million funds for the trade, Montanucci recalls that, in the words of Caramanna, the disbursement should start again from the end of June, “but he knows that we won’t see anything before the autumn”.
