Italian Athletics Championships
La Spezia 29 and 30 June

La Spezia, 19 June 2024 – On 29 and 30 June the “Montagna” Sports Field will be the stage for the Italian Athletics Championships.
In 10 days La Spezia will host one of the most important national sporting events of the year which confirm how the city is able to organize and host national and international events, thanks to the investments made in recent years by the Administration in sports facilities.
The mayor of La Spezia Pierluigi Peracchini declares: “The Italian Athletics Championships will be the sporting event of the year for our city. The great champions will compete before the Paris Olympics and we are proud that they will be able to do so in La Spezia, in the Mountain Sports Field. As an Administration we have invested to allow this competition to take place, making the “Montagna” one of the few structures capable of hosting events of this caliber, with the implementation of various modernization works including the installation of the four lighthouse towers, which will give an extraordinary spectacle allowing races even at night. The city and the La Spezia community are ready to welcome the athletics champions and to experience a unique event in the history of our territory. I thank the offices of the Municipality of La Spezia for carrying forward the work and Fidal for organizing the Championships”.
The athletics championships that will be held in La Spezia arrive at a golden moment for athletics, which saw Italy place in first place at the recent European Championships held in Rome with 11 gold, 9 silver, 4 bronze for a total of 24 medals.
The Mayor presented the program of the games this morning at the “Montagna” field, which has undergone important interventions such as the renovation of the athletics track and the recent installation of the latest generation light towers which will allow the competitions to take place even at night. of La Spezia Pierluigi Peracchini, the Sports Councilor of the Municipality of La Spezia Marco Frascatore, the General President of Fidal Stefano Mei, the Captain of the Vessel Luca Miani, representing the Navy.
“The absolute Italian athletics championships represent one of the most important sporting events ever hosted in our city – declared the sports councilor Marco Frascatore – They will be a spectacular event of great interest both nationally and internationally and especially in this moment where Italian athletes have accomplished and are accomplishing feats that will remain in the history of world sport and that have made Italian athletics a true protagonist by accomplishing, at the last European Championships in Rome, truly extraordinary feats both in terms of medals and unprecedented presence. For us, sport plays a very important role in society. The Montagna slope, after very important interventions by the Municipality of La Spezia in which we wanted to invest with truly important structural interventions, has now become one of the most beautiful and welcoming in Italy. I would like to thank all those who wanted and determined together with us the realization of this sporting event; a special thank you to Mayor Peracchini who believes and loves sport for everything it represents; to the Fidal national president Stefano Mei who believed in our city, to the La Spezia athletics club Duferco and to the Navy. To all the technicians and offices and departments who made all this possible. As Sports Councilor I consider myself satisfied and fortunate. A great team effort that I am sure will give and deliver a spectacular event to our community with over 800 athletes present. The race will see the absolute best Italian athletes and it will be a joy to cheer for all of them in what could be a real springboard towards the next Paris Olympics in August.

The competitions will begin on Saturday 29 June at 10.15am with the 110 hurdles and the 100 meters, the finals of which will be held at 9pm. The triple jump competition will take place at 7.50pm, named in memory of Norberto Capiferri, one of the fathers of La Spezia athletics . Shot put and javelin will also be held in the afternoon and the 5000 meters in the evening.
Sunday 30 June will open at 8.30 am with the 10 km walk that will take place along the city streets starting from via Domenico Chiodo. The javelin, discus and long jump competitions will follow.
A village will be set up inside the Campo Montagna where there will be stands and refreshment points.
Additionally, the Navy will have its multimedia bus tour throughout the day.
