Novara, Arona and Lake Maggiore: a day of history, art and local culinary specialities

Here is a brief report of the cultural day, organized by the Committee, within the schedule of cultural activities offered to members

As part of the socio-cultural activity of the UISP Committee of Brescia, last Saturday 1 June a group of our members took part in the second of the trips scheduled for 2024.

The goal: Novara with guided tour of the city e Arona on Lake Maggiore.

In the morning the participants followed with great interest the guide who accompanied us in an engaging way through the most significant places in the historic center of Novara.

At the beginning, in the Visconti and Sforzesco Castle, we focused on its long historical vicissitudes which culminated in the recent reconstruction.

We then passed through the central Piazza Martiri with its prestigious buildings, including the large Teatro Coccia, to reach the Duomo, a singular union between the ancient part and the nineteenth-century reconstruction by the architect Alessandro Antonelli. The Antonellian quadriportico of the Cathedral is flanked by the austere Romanesque 5th century Baptistery, the oldest building in the city. The views offered by the cloister of the Duomo, the courtyard of the Bishop’s Palace and the adjacent streets are very suggestive.

Passing through the Broletto courtyard, closed on all four sides by buildings of different styles and different historical destinations, to finally reach the Basilica of the Patron Saint Saint Gaudenzio which, in addition to housing valuable works, is the most significant and eye-catching monument of Novara, with the the bold Antonelliana Dome, visible from the whole city.

After the free break for lunch, which for some was the discovery of a typical dish, we moved to Arona, on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore.

A dutiful visit to the gigantic statue of San Carlo Borromeo, the San Carlone, and then everyone strolling among the numerous tourists and enjoying the vast panoramas, until the appointed time for return.

Accompanying the group were the recreational activities volunteer Concetta Saccoia, the director of the Uisp Territorial Council Giuseppe Faia and the organizer Bruna Paghera

It was a very pleasant day for everyone: good weather, excellent company, trained and friendly tour guide, good driver and perfect organization. A good omen to finally resume the social activity abruptly interrupted in the unhappy pandemic years.
