Palermo, illegal bluefin tuna seized: fines of 80 thousand euros

PALERMO – The Palermo coast guard has seizedin a month and a half, 23 tons of fish, including 130 specimens of bluefin tuna, for a total of 19 and a half tons, caught illegally.






During the checks, from May 1st to June 14th, the military carried out 220 inspections for a total of 527 checks, they ascertained 45 administrative offenses and imposed fines for a total of 79 thousand and 500 euros.

Where the checks were carried out

The checks were carried out both on illegal sellers in local markets and throughout the province, both at sea, after stopping some fishing boats returning from fishing trips, towing the tuna in an attempt to hide them. Inspections were also carried out in ports and on the streets, stopping isothermal vans.

Ninety-three specimens of bluefin tuna without traceability, for a total weight of 12 tons, were seized in the ports of Balestrate, Termini Imerese, Cefalù, Porticello, where the military imposed administrative sanctions for a total of 20,500 euros.

Specimens of bluefin tuna that have been deemed suitable for human consumption by the ASP vets they were donated to charitable organisations.

The checks were also extended to the coastal municipalities from Gela to Cefalù including the Pelagie Islands, to Pantelleria, the Egadi Islands and the Island of Ustica.
