We will talk about Mediterranean and the opportunities offered in the socio-cultural and economic-demographic sphere of Calabria, without neglecting the migratory phenomenon which is also a response to the depopulation especially of the internal areas, as well as promoting integration between different cultures and religions, contributing to a peace process which is increasingly invoked from below in the conference “Mediterraneo, a laboratory of integration. The potential contribution of Calabria”, scheduled for Reggio Calabria Wednesday 19 June, from 9.45am, at the headquarters of the Regional Council promoted by the Association of former regional councilors of Calabria with the collaboration and patronage of the diocese of Reggio Calabria-Bova.
The proceedings will be opened by institutional greetings from Archbishop Fortunato Morrone, president of the Calabrian Episcopal Conference, and from the presidents of the Regional Council, Filippo Mancuso, and of the Association of former regional councillors, Stefano Priolo. Moderated by Giacomo Gambassi, Avvenire journalist, the works will also focus on some “good practices” in the field of reception-integration, primarily of Municipalities, through the projects of the “Sai Network” (Reception and Integration System). In Italy, as of 31 March 2024, these projects are 884, 114 of which are in Calabria alone. The aim of the conference is also to contribute to the “Mediterranean, frontier of peace” project by bringing to it – from below – a “tangible piece of the integration process essential for peace”.
On the occasion of the conference, Card. Bassetti, archbishop emeritus of Perugia-Città della Pieve and former president of the CEI and speaker at the conference, will visit some reception facilities of the diocesan Church of Reggio for applicants for international protection. On the afternoon of June 19 (6 pm), he will visit “Casa Farias” of the community of welcomed migrants, and then reach the Help Center of the diocesan Caritas, also meeting the volunteers of the ecclesial coordination of landings where a video of the activities carried out by the same will be shown Coordination.
The visit will culminate with the Eucharistic celebration presided over by the cardinal in the square in front of the Help Center. On the morning of June 20th, Card. Bassetti will visit the Scalabrini listening center and then gather in prayer in the cemetery of migrants and the poor in Armo, the first and only one built in Calabria.
