Enrico Berlinguer’s tomb desecrated in the cemetery, the anger of his daughter Bianca: “Cowardly action”

Another gash on the tomb of Enrico Berlinguer. A few days after the commemoration of his death, on 11 June 1984, the tombstone of the historic secretary of the Italian Communist Party was again targeted by unknown vandals, forcing his daughter Bianca to return to denouncing the incident on social media, after the previous two occurred in May.

The complaint of her daughter Bianca

“For the third time in the space of just two months, our father’s tomb in the Prima Porta cemetery was desecrated, six days after the anniversary of his death” wrote Bianca Berlinguer on her social media profiles, denouncing the act of vandalism, together with her other children Maria, Marco and Laura Berlinguer, Enrico’s children, in a post published on Instagram.

“The cowardly action of some scoundrels – we read again in the post – reveals that it is not the act of a deranged person but of a a gesture with a clearly political content. We hope that the necessary measures will be taken to avoid further outrages.”

The two previous episodes of vandalism of Enrico Berlinguer’s tomb had aroused transversal solidarity from all of politics, receiving messages of condemnation from the exponents of various parties, from the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein to the president of the Senate Ignazio La Russa, from the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano to the vice president of the M5s Chiara Appendino.

The day after the damage reported by the family members of the historic secretary of the PCI, the leaders of the ANPI went to the Flaminio cemetery to pay homage with flowers at Berlinguer’s tomb.

Even in this last case, yet another defacement of the Sardinian politician’s tombstone sparked indignation outside and inside Parliament. Among the first to condemn the gesture was the deputy of the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra, Nicola Fratoianni.

“It is clear that this is not an individual gesture, but a political act – declared the secretary of the Italian Left – Is it possible that no one made sure that this massacre was not repeated? Now, so that it doesn’t happen again and those responsible are identified and punished, we expect the authorities to take immediate action. For this reason I will present a parliamentary question to the Minister of the Interior”.

“The memory and political testament of Enrico Berlinguer can never be scratched, because they live in the hearts of the Italian people,” concluded Fratoianni.
