BIOP-SIENA, focus in Siena on rheumatological diseases

Biopsy procedures useful in the histopathological diagnosis of rheumatological diseases: this is the focus of the 2024 edition of BIOP-SIENA, which will be held from 19 to 21 June in room 6 of the teaching center and on lot 3, floor -1 of the hospital – University of Siena.

The event is organized by the scientific secretariat made up of professionals from the Sienese university hospital, chaired by Professor Bruno Frediani, director of Rheumatology, with scientific director Professor Pietro Rubegni, director of Dermatology, and members of the secretariat Doctor Marco Bardelli and Dr. Stefano Gentileschi of Rheumatology.

«In the first two days – states Professor Bruno Frediani – the colleagues involved in the congress will talk about the diseases in which tissue biopsy can be useful, while on the third day practical exercises will be held: the patients who would have had to undergo a biopsy, in Rheumatology they will be biopsied in the presence of 10 selected students. Radiology – continues the director of Rheumatology at the Aou Senese – has had important developments in recent years, but in some cases the biopsy is always a very effective tool. With a biopsy you can take a fragment of tissue to observe under the microscope, for example the synovium, the capsule that surrounds the joint, to proceed with targeted therapies, while with dermatological colleagues we often proceed with skin biopsies which allow us to understand the level of inflammation and therefore the type of therapies to be carried out. There is also a bone biopsy, to analyze some non-osteoporotic forms of the bone such as osteomalacia.

Furthermore – concludes Professor Frediani -, a very frequent disease is Sjogren’s syndrome, which corresponds to dryness of the eyes and mouth, an autoimmune form that can be identified through a biopsy of the salivary glands”.

BIOP-SIENA is aimed above all at doctors in specialist training (rheumatology) and rheumatology specialists who want to acquire the technical skills to correctly implement some of the main biopsy samples useful in the diagnosis of diseases of rheumatological interest. The congress will open on Wednesday 19 June at 2pm in room 6 and will end on Friday 21 June at 1pm after two practical sessions of carrying out procedures with practicing biopsy techniques. The BIOP-SIENA practical course is created with the contribution of SIR, the Italian Society of Rheumatology.
