PERUGIA It was already understood that it would be a challenging electoral campaign in the first months of 2024. That is, when the candidacy of the two main coalitions was made official, the centre-right one with Margherita Scoccia, and the broad center-left with Vittoria Ferdinandi.
THE GROUPS
A warm climate was also announced on social media where even some large Facebook groups in the city, in due course, announced the rules during the election period on their message boards. As on the “Fontivegge Project” page, it brings together the residents and shopkeepers of the city district which in April published a handbook to be followed in “pre-election” mode.
Among the rules is not to publish content in support of one or another candidate and she made herself available for meetings with the mayor and the city council. And then there is the request to members not to participate in organized party events and to continue to argue on some issues, or on the historic requests. Such as safety, decorum and liveability of the neighborhood and the intensification of law enforcement action. That is, the themes at the center of the electoral campaigns from 2014 to come.
THE DERBY
In fact, the atmosphere is that of a derby. With on one side the supporters of Ferdinandi and on the other those for Scoccia recognizable by the “uniform”. The fans of the centre-right active on social media are those who show off a photo of a white daisy on their Facebook profile while those of the centre-left flaunt a logo with the “V” and the words “United for victory”. And so, post after post, photo after photo, the comments range from “Pila’s Barbie” recalling Soccia’s long blonde hair to those referring to Ferdinandi’s dazzling smile “printed from morning to night”. Insults and criticism, which often do not even concern the contents of electoral programmes, characterized by a form of verbal aggression and where swear words are not lacking. In short, for every provocation, there is no shortage of mass responses. And it was not uncommon to witness real social clashes which saw outgoing councilors and councilors at the forefront against the candidates for the council.
QUICK ANSWER
What awakened the virtual agora on this hot Sunday in June was the sharing of the words that Mayor Andrea Romizi had dedicated in 2021 to candidate Ferdinandi fresh from the prestigious honor of knighthood from President Sergio Mattarella. «Perugia is proud and grateful to you» said Romizi. The outgoing councilor Edi Cicchi, in response to a post, underlined «the impartiality of the municipal administration, with anyone who presented themselves with a valid project taking advantage of the Municipality’s support for projects that were financed by bodies appointed for this purpose. It’s easy for social entrepreneurs to do this.” Marco Casodi (Fondazione Città del Sole Onlus) responded by reiterating that the Municipality did not contribute with resources but “through intercession towards the Perugia Foundation so that a contribution was assigned”.
THE OTHERS
Yesterday the final word also arrived on the relationship chapter. There was no agreement.
For the run-off Massimo Monni made it official, after a summit with the candidates for the council who supported him by collecting a total of 1.4 percent (1168 votes), that he «has carefully evaluated their proposals», including that of recognizing «the role of deputy mayor” in case of victory in the Perugia run-off. Despite the offer, however, “I have chosen to leave the Perugia Merita candidates free” in view of the run-off. At the end of the summit with him, bearers of “different sensitivities”, the decision was therefore reached: “Each candidate from Perugia Merita will vote according to conscience”. And so it was, so much so that Carla Casciari and Antonio Bartolini supported Ferdinandi’s candidacy with a joint press note, complete with a play on words with the name Vittoria.
THE SQUARES
Meanwhile, the two Perugians Margherita and Vittoria have met and shared the playing field in recent days: from Ripa during the village festival to the Pian di Massiano market. Scoccia continues his tour today at 7pm Ponte Felcino in Piazza della Torre della Catasta and at 9pm in Ponte Pattoli with pizza, obviously margherita, and beer for everyone. On the other hand, Ferdinandi from 6pm in Piazza Silvio Guelpa in Ponte Felcino. The VIPs To complete each electoral campaign there is also the parade of the VIPs of national politics. For the Democratic Party, a double stop for Stefano Bonaccini tomorrow at 6pm at Villa Buitoni in Perugia and then in Bastia at 9pm. The visit of the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano is scheduled for Wednesday morning in Perugia
