TREVISO – Treviso loses a piece of history, a pillar of Treviso. For 37 years she has served mozze with addition or ham, “scosse”, cedar and prosecco from behind the counter of the iconic Osteria Dalla Gigia. Saturday evening Ovidio Gobbo, 76 years old, soul and founder of the historic tavern in Via Barberia, has passed away, which he managed for 37 years with his partner and brother-in-law Sandro Valiera. His daughter Martina broke the sad news with a post on Facebook: “From this evening Ovidio is no longer physically with us but the smiles, the jokes and the great affection will remain.”
News that has thrown the entire city and entire generations of Treviso into despair. From 1982 to August 2019 Sandro and Ovidio were behind the counter of one of the best-known clubs in the historic center of Treviso: their jokes, their subtle irony and Ovidio’s way of doing calculations, strictly in mind, were unforgettable. Then, in 2019, the management passed to the young Tosca Busato to whom they passed down traditions and the spirit of Gigia.
“This is news that saddens me greatly. With Ovid a piece of our history goes away: at the Osteria Dalla Gigia in Via Barberia, alongside Sandro Valiera, for 37 years he pampered thousands of Trevigiansi.e. not, becoming a symbol of the “Trevigianity”, that way of hosting and involving which is characteristic of our community”, writes the mayor Mario Conte. “Ovidio was a discreet and kind man who managed, with his manners, courtesy and professionalism, but above all his love for his profession, for the customer and for quality, to promote our city as an experience to live , making the innkeeper a reference and a friend. I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends and those who loved him.” Ovidio leaves behind his wife Margherita, his life and work partner, his daughters and grandchildren. The funeral will be scheduled shortly.
