Forlì, breast surgery department of excellence and increasingly active

In 2023, over 1,300 women were treated by breast surgery in Forlì, Ravenna, Cesena and Faenza, a center of excellence at a national level. 971 operations were performed for the surgical treatment of breast cancer, 200 for reconstructive surgery and approximately 150 for benign pathology. These are the numbers of breast surgery directed by Annalisa Curcio, director of the complex breast surgery operational unit. «We have also subjected some male patients to surgery – she explains –: male breast cancer is a rare but present pathology, often associated with a genetic mutation which can determine a high risk of the onset of the tumor in the context of family. In the first quarter of 2024 there was an increase in activity, surgical interventions and specialist visits at our operating unit: a total of 260 patients with breast cancer have already been treated and approximately 60 reconstructive operations have been performed, recording an increase in surgical activity by 7.6% compared to the first quarter of 2023. We also performed many more outpatient visits with an increase in activity of approximately 12%. This increasing trend in our activity, compared to last year, is associated above all with the increase in reconstructive surgery activity, in an attempt to recover from the long period of interruption linked to the Sars Covid pandemic but also with the influx of patients from other provinces and regions, which in growing numbers turn to our Centre, attracted by the quality of the path offered”. The patients most affected are those over the age of 60, followed by citizens aged between 50 and 59. «Our operational unit – he continues – is recognized among the national reference centers for the treatment of breast cancer and the management of hereditary tumors and this leads to a greater flow of younger, sometimes very young, patients».
