Dalia Kaddari christened the launch of Mariposa| Cagliari

“I call you Mariposa, good wind and little wave”. With this wish Dalia Kaddari christened the launch of Mariposa, the Moth class boat created by the UniCa Sailing Team. The hull, made entirely of eco-sustainable material by engineering students of the University of Cagliari, had its baptism in the waters in front of the Marina Piccola Amphitheater in front of an audience of fans, onlookers, sailing lovers and friends of the ‘University.

The sailing team of the University of Cagliari is leaving for Malcesine, on Lake Garda, to take part in the Foiling SuMoth Challenge, the international competition reserved for prototypes created by students from other universities across Europe.

The team, coordinated by Flavio Stochino (engineer and researcher at DICAAR), is made up of 65 male and female students from Engineering and Architecture degree courses, but also Economic, Legal and Political Sciences and Humanistic Studies, led by the team manager Gian Mario Broach. Skipper of the boat and team captain Gabriele de Marco.

The Magnificent Rector of the University of Cagliari, Francesco Mola, took part in the launching ceremony: “When the request for this project was presented, as soon as I heard the word sailing, there was an immediate yes in my heart” said the Magnificent Rector , Francesco Mola, “These boys and girls are the standard bearers of our university, because they will carry the name of the University around Italy. A work by different schools that is perfectly consistent with our mission of contamination. The launch”, he added, “falls in a particularly important year for the university, with the activation, for the first time in history, of the naval engineering course in Olbia next October. The best wish therefore for Mariposa is that it will be pushed by the wind, by the engineering and by all of us who will be there to cheer for you”.

“In November we had neither a screwdriver nor a project, now we have a brand new boat, which will have its christening this evening” underlined Flavio Stochino, “the project has united many people and as many souls, finding the interest and collaboration of many local stakeholders and many colleagues from the University. My thanks go to them. I thank the Rector, who believed and put his trust in this three-year project: this is in fact the first boat we are proposing and we hope to be able to participate in other regattas in the coming years with other boats. I thank the extraordinary commitment of all the students who will go to challenge the other universities next week, thanks to them this complex prototype was created. “
