Ecoboxes removed from Olbia: “They must not be increased”

The protest against the elimination of Ecoboxes from Olbia.

It grows worry among the citizens of Olbia due to the recent decisions of the municipal administration regarding waste management in the city, in particular the elimination of Ecoboxes. The problem of indiscriminate waste abandonment is now evident and is growing alarming dimensions, with numerous corners of the city invaded by waste left by uncivilized citizens. The images and comments on social media testify to the seriousness of the situation, and not only that defaces the urban landscape but it also encourages the proliferation of wild boars, creating further public health and safety concerns.

There Municipal Council Resolution number 196, issued on 4 June 2024, provides for the suppression of the Ecobox service, containers intended for separate waste collection. This decision does not appear to offer one adequate solution to the problem. Many citizens and observers believe that, rather than improving the situation, the elimination of Ecoboxes could further aggravate the waste emergency. Thus leaving the city without effective tools for waste management and control.

“There removal of Ecoboxes could aggravate the dispersion of waste into the environment. The reasons given for the suppression of the Ecoboxes which would have become ‘receptacles for illegal landfills’ are not sufficiently convincing – they say from the secretariat of the Italian Socialist Party -. Indeed, offenders who illegally abandon large quantities of waste, including bulky materials and vehicle parts, should be severely sanctioned and forced to cover the costs of removal, especially considering the presence of numerous cameras.”

Administration, according to the socialists, would have chosen to eliminate an essential service, in the mistaken belief that by eliminating the Ecoboxes, waste will disappear. “This is not the case. The solution is not to divest waste management, but rather strengthen the service – continue from the PSI -. Therefore, we propose to increase the number of Ecoboxes and install more bins along the seafront and near commercial premises. But also increase the number of pieces/waste that can be delivered at the collection center in the industrial area. The solution is not to cut services, but to invest more resources in waste collection for one growing city like Olbia”.
