Montesarchio-Benevento on foot along the Appia, a UNESCO heritage site

Benevento

They left this morning in the square of the Tower and the Castle of Montesarchio to arrive a few hours later in Benevento under the majestic Arch of Trajan.
In view of the UNESCO recognition of the Appia Antica as a world heritage site, which will be made official in India at the end of July, Sannio rediscovers slow tourism.

Among the first protagonists was the Taburno Trekking Montesarchio group which, taking part in the “Appia Week” event, a pedestrian cycling relay on the Appia Antica, as “ambassadors” covered the stretch of approximately 20 km walking only and exclusively, on the true route of the Appia Antica and documenting the existing and still visible original features of the Regina Viarum.

“Our group, made up of 24 people, faithfully followed the ancient route of the Appia from Montesarchio to Benevento – the president of Taburno Trekking Montesarchio, Mario Cecere, explains to us upon arrival –. We are very used to walking, we often walk 20 kilometers in the mountains, but walking in the footsteps of history has a completely different meaning. It was truly exciting to relive a journey that has more than two thousand years of history and which unfortunately has often been forgotten and under-appreciated.”

The Councilor for Culture of the Municipality Morena Cecere greeted the group in Montesarchio at the start and once at their destination there was no shortage of the usual photo and a toast to celebrate the achievement. The valorisation of the Appia, it is worth remembering, first and foremost passes through those who travel along it and a synergistic action is essential to protect it and make the route welcoming for walkers.
