Chiara opened the marathon, Gaia closed it. The two 18-year-old twins from Spilimbergo (Pordenone) are among the young donors under 28 protagonists of the second edition of the 24 hours of blood donation, organized by Afds in Udine. An initiative, unique in Italy – underline the promoters – with a high symbolic value, “in a region afflicted by a decline in birth rates and with an increasingly elderly population”.
During the solidarity marathon, which ended yesterday at 12, 123.9 liters of blood and plasma were collected, compared to 116.4 liters in 2023. 230 donors participated out of the 250 scheduled (“a percentage of unsuitable donors is physiological to the medical examination”). About thirty Afds volunteers engaged in logistical and organizational support; 55 doctors, nurses and technical staff who alternated shifts.
“What matters is not so much the record, but rather the meaning of this initiative – underlined the president of the volunteers Roberto Flora – in a community affected by a declining birth rate and an aging population, involving 250 donors under 28 was a huge success”. “This marathon further qualifies the Friulian solidarity vocation, given that the province of Udine is already at the top nationally for plasma collected – observed the director of the Department of Transfusion Medicine Giovanni Barillari of the Central Fruli University Health Authority -. To carry out the Within 24 hours, an absolutely non-trivial organizational machine was set in motion, unthinkable without the collaboration and dedication of nurses, administrative technicians and doctors and for the success of which we thank the Regional Department of Health.
Once again it is demonstrated that thanks to the alliance between health institutions and the Friulian Blood Donors Association it is possible to carry out projects of very high social value”.
