Latina / Extreme poverty, councilor Nasso: “Working as a team to give answers with determination”

It was held yesterday afternoon in the Calicchia room of the Municipality of Latina the second meeting on the topic of “extreme poverty”, in which, in addition to the promoter, the Municipality of Latina-Social Services – district and municipal area – and Emergency area, Red Cross, ASL-UOC Migrant Population, Social Emergency Response, Night Reception Centre, Caritas and Mental Health Centre. The meeting was chaired by the Welfare Councilor of the Municipality of Latina Michele Nasso. The aim of the initiative promoted by the capital municipality, leader of the Social and Health District Lt 2 which also includes the municipalities of Sabaudia, Pontinia, Sermoneta and Norma, is that of networking the multiplicity of actors who operate on the front of extreme poverty, with the aim of creating an integrated service capable of giving faster and more incisive, targeted and qualitatively better responses to a complex, rapidly transforming reality and of ever greater proportions.

During the first meeting which took place at the end of May, the participants had agreed on the need to provide data relating to the different realities followed by each organization and put them together to have the broadest and most detailed picture possible on the entire field of intervention, meanwhile at municipal level and subsequently also at district level.

“From the data illustrated yesterday, it clearly emerged – Councilor Nasso said – that the phenomenon of poverty is transversal and largely involves individuals from Italian families and that the most evident characteristics of the condition of extreme poverty are non-self-sufficiency and the housing emergency, which constitute a limit that is sometimes insurmountable for those who have the strength to try to redeem oneself from an existential phase of marginality through forms of social inclusion”. The data relating to the nationalities of all the subjects registered by the various services and age groups were also analysed, with indicators of great interest for operators involved on the social front.

From the detailed examination of the different realities present in the municipal territory, from that of homeless to that of the permanent reception centre, from assistance to migrants to that provided to fragile subjects transiting through the DSM or the Serd, from the emerging phenomenon of so-called domestic tramping to the emergency of separated fathers, the need has emerged to strengthen coordination between the various operators involved in the area and to extend the service network also to the Prefecture, the Police Headquarters and the Order of Pharmacists, which will be invited to participate in the table on extreme poverty as early as the next meeting scheduled for 27 June.

“We immediately realized that cross-referencing data and comparing different operational experiences – said Nasso – they constitute a non-deferrable starting point for organizing a widespread service capable of giving concrete answers to a reality that is taking shape very important proportions that we cannot pretend not to see, but which we must face with the serenity and determination of those who want to understand in order to resolve”.
