Hiring in Umbrian companies decreased in June – Pianeta Camere

There are 5 thousand 560 hirings expected in Umbria by companies in June, minus 5.1% on 2023, and 15 thousand 460 in the summer quarter June-August (-1.7%). A negative employment balance determined by the prudence of tourism companies in forecasting the job placements they intend to make (-9.7% in June, -7.3% in the quarter compared to the same periods in 2023). The picture emerges from the new data from the Excelsior Information System, managed by Unioncamere-Anpal, published by the Umbria Chamber of Commerce, on the basis of which the difficulty of companies in finding staff is further worsening and the 56% of places available (against 52% of a year ago) now risks remaining uncovered, and there are “few” job placements available for graduates.

According to what the Chamber of Commerce reports, Umbrian companies that expect new calls are 15% of the total, less than 18% of the national average.

The three most requested professional figures account for 66% of the total revenue expected by companies.

“The data from the new Excelsior survey (for June and for the summer quarter June-August), which I remember has become a real point of reference for forecasts on hiring by companies thanks to the involvement of as many as 100 thousand companies representing the entrepreneurial heritage Italian, this time they are not making Umbria shine, which is experiencing a decline greater than the national average and that of the centre” underlined Giorgio Mencaroni, president of the Umbria Chamber of Commerce. “Compared to 2023 – he added -, the Umbrian industry declines (minus 50 starts in June, minus 90 in the summer quarter), as do services (minus 230 hires in June, minus 190 in the quarter). This weighs on the trend of starts in services are the forecasts of tourism companies on the hirings I intend to make, decreasing compared to 2023 both in June and in the June-August quarter. But the situation, as I have already had the opportunity to state, could prove to be the case better because there could be an excess of prudence in the forecasts of tourism companies.

Let’s also keep in mind that the Umbria Region’s summer promotional campaign, which has had gratifying results in the past, has yet to show all its effects. Finally, the very serious problem of companies’ difficulty in finding the professional figures they need remains, and indeed worsens.

In this context, we need an organic and persistent policy that includes, in addition to training and everything needed to overcome this mismatch, also a cut in the tax wedge, to increase the real income of workers and stimulate supply of work. In Italy and Umbria, given this serious difficulty in finding personnel on the part of companies, there is a very large area of inactive people. A situation that absolutely must be removed if we want to remove this boulder from the path of economic and social growth and development.”

In detail, in Umbria in June 2024 companies expect to make 5 thousand 560 job placements, compared to 5 thousand 850 in the same month of 2023 (-300, -5.1%) and 6 thousand 160 in 2022. A contraction on an annual basis of hiring, the expected one is “definitely higher” than both the Italian figure (-0.32%) and that of the center (-1.5%). If the horizon extends to the summer quarter June-August, the hirings expected by companies in Umbria are 15 thousand 460, compared to 15 thousand 730 in the same quarter 2023 (-270 job starts, -1.7%).

Furthermore, in the quarter, Umbria moves against the trend compared to both the national figure (+1%) and that of the Center (+0.2%), which recorded the plus sign. But in the summer quarter, the hiring forecasts in Umbria by companies are not, unlike the single month of June, the lowest among the other three central regions: compared to -1.7% Umbria, in fact, are worse the Marche (-2.3%), while Tuscany (+0.5%) and Lazio (+1%) show an increase in job placements.

According to Excelsior data, it should be highlighted that, however, in the June-August 2024 quarter hirings in Umbria, if they fell compared to the same period in 2023, were higher than in 2022 (15 thousand 480 against 15 thousand 400). The tourism sector, in terms of job placements, plays a key role in the June-August summer quarter; suffice it to say that, on average, the direct tourism sector represents over 21% in terms of hiring in the month of June and over 22% in the June-August quarter. And it is precisely, compared to 2023 and 2022, the weakening of hiring forecasts by companies in the direct tourism sector that is causing the Umbrian employment budget to suffer a deficit. In fact, in June 2024, companies in the region expect 1,120 hires in “accommodation and catering services, tourist services”, compared to 1,240 in 2023 (-9.7%) and 1,400 in 2022. If you look at the quarter June-August, hiring by tourism companies is expected in Umbria at 3,420, down (-7.3%) compared to the same quarter of 2023 (3,690) and in line with the 2022 figure (3,430).

Regarding the characteristics of job starts in Umbria in June, in 23% the expected income will be stable, i.e. with a permanent or apprenticeship contract, while in 77% it will be fixed-term; 65% of start-ups will be concentrated in the service sector and 68% in companies with fewer than 50 employees; 11% will be allocated to managers, specialists and technicians, a share lower than the national average (14%); in 56 cases out of 100 companies expect to have difficulty finding the desired profiles. The situation worsens compared to 2023, when the figure was 52 cases out of 100. Furthermore, the Umbrian figure is “definitely higher” than the national average, where the difficulty in finding staff concerns 48 cases out of 100. For a share equal to 34% of the hires will involve young people under 30. For a share of 22%, companies plan to hire immigrant staff.

Only 9% of the expected revenue will be allocated to graduate staff.

The Umbrian figure is once again lower than the national average, which is also “unsatisfactory” (11%) according to the Chamber of Commerce.
