Carrara, a little Duckburg, a little imperial Rome

To certify that Carrara is a Serie B city it was not necessary to wait for the well-deserved promotion of the marble team to the cadet series: we already knew it, unfortunately. But a miracle or a lucky astral situation seems to be reversing the trend. In the beginning a cascade of millions of euros poured into the territory (PNRR, Article 21, Notice of Suburbs and Water Front), then came the nomination as provincial capital, and now Carrarese has returned to Serie B after 76 years. Incredible, reality surpasses fantasy: all that remains is for oil deposits and gold mines to be discovered (the Scrooge deposits and the “white” gold are well guarded) and the circle closes. Is all this trouble due to the skill of this administration or to the raging luck, Gastone style, of those who find everything ready without making the slightest effort? History is the teacher, and, for the record, it is necessary to point out that the previous administrations, in addition to the damage (not a little), have left as a dowry (especially that of Zubbani) financing and tenders that the current administration finds itself on a silver plate. With the hope that the Arrighi council will be able to bring them to a successful conclusion, we cannot, however, hide the perplexities and doubts that a large part of the citizens have towards those who govern the city. Speaking of investments, the different approach that the Massa and Carrara administrations have towards culture and entertainment is brought to the attention of the political class and the community: the municipality of Massa invests in exhibitions, concerts and summer shows six hundred thousand thousand euros and becomes “Stage”, Carrara commits over one million euros for the stadium and the municipality it becomes a “Page for Patricians”. In relaunching the proposal to privatize the Stadio dei Marmi, it is painful to point out that, while the municipal territory languishes in a state of abandonment and degradation, the “circus games” excessively occupy the local political agenda and with accounting relevance also the pages of the Municipal Praetorian Notice Board. In fact, the matches against Benevento and Vicenza between big screens, security plans, temporary fencing, mobile gates and shuttle buses cost the public coffers more than thirty thousand thousand euros, therefore, given that the increase in the capacity of the stadium has led to an increase in the number of tickets (greater revenue): why were these expenses not made by the Carrarese owners? The panem et circenses strategy is also highlighted by the similarities that the administration shows towards Imperial Rome. The choice to purchase a Lego Colosseum, paid for at a premium, to be used for the Marmora exhibition is motivated by the fact that the aforementioned game would be a useful tool for teaching children. However, Lego specifies that the aforementioned Colosseum is aimed at adults. Therefore, the analogy Stadium and Colosseum turns out to be in both cases a bad use of power by the public administration which, on the borders of the Empire, governs a Marble Duckburg where the municipal stadium is called dei Marmi (but of them there is no trace), where the beyond twenty-six million euros that every year the Municipality collects from the Marble sector are pulverized and where the reproduction of the Colosseum in an exhibition entitled Romana Marmora It’s plastic! And so, quietly, I take the liberty of suggesting to local administrators that they privatize the Stadium: the (a lot of) money allocated to it for modernization could be used for public works, which have been waiting to be carried out for some time, or for the sports sector . In a city where, in recent days, numerous marble companies have appeared in court against the municipality of Carrara (39,735.95 euros plus VAT and CPA paid for by the public coffers) to establish perpetual emphyteusis on the marble farms, granting perpetual rights to one of the major stone mining companies, owner of Carrarese Calcio, the municipal stadium would be a paradoxical, but above all rational and revolutionary act. This would give fans and enthusiasts the opportunity to aspire to sporting goals that were unthinkable until yesterday, and would also guarantee economic returns for the owners and enormous benefits for related industries.

In conclusion: “give up the Stadium to those who know how to make good use of it and leave the Colosseum to Rome and the Romans.”
