“SilenzioSuono – SoundSilence” at GAM Turin

At the GAM Turin inaugurates SilenzioSuono – SoundSilencethe exhibition curated by Elena Volpato which presents 471 artist records.

The exhibition allows you to admire the record covers, many of which were designed by the artists themselves. Furthermore, from the opening day it is possible to listen to all the audio tracks and read the documents inside the albums both on display and in the renovated Video Library.

There collection represents significant artistic sonic and poetic experimentsstarting from the first research futurists with performances by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Luigi Russolo. The Dadaism is represented by artists such as Richard Huelsenbeck, Kurt Schwitters, Tristan Tzara, Hugo Ball and Raoul Hausmann.

Arthur Petronio, influenced by Wassily Kandinsky, developed the theory of verbophonie. Karel Appel and Jean Dubuffet explored natural sounds, while the Lettrism is represented by Isidore Isou and Maurice Lemaître. The collection also includes works by Yves Klein and John Cage on the theme of silence and the production Fluxus with artists such as Joseph Beuys, Yoko Ono and Nam June Paik.

There Beat Generation is included with records edited by John Giorno, with contributions from William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. Other key figures of conceptual neo-avant-gardes such as Lawrence Weiner, Allan Kaprow and Richard Long are also represented.

Laurie Anderson, with her multimedia performances and Spoken Poetryis prominent in the the eighties, together with Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier. Give it to him the ninetiesartists such as Christian Marclay and Katharina Fritsch are present, while in the Two-thousandthe collection includes works by Henrik Hakansson and Carsten Nicolai.

The collection has expanded with the first 13 releases of the Xong collection – Artist Recordswhich allows artists to explore the sound field to express their poetics.

The inaugurationThursday 27 June, includes 3 sound performances by artists from the GAM collection:

  • Riccardo Baruzzi and Elena Busni they create a unique sound interaction;
  • the performance of Francesco Cavaliere activate the glass sculpture Sabanas IIinspired by marine flora and archetypal figures, creating an atmosphere between alchemy and science-fiction;
  • Jacopo Benassi + Untitled Noise they deconstruct historical pieces with a poetic spoken word action, interacting directly with the audience.

This exhibition is a unique opportunity to explore the fusion of visual and sound art, celebrating the artistic innovations of various decades.
