The background

At the end of May the Council of State had rejected the application of the tax due to lack of motivation and investigation. In other words, the tax was duly established by Parliament, but to apply it the Municipality of Venice would first have had to examine various alternatives also proposed in the text of the law and then the justification for the budget recovery was not considered sufficient as the administration has recorded substantial eight-figure surpluses over the years, investing those for 2023 in the “Bosco dello Sport” operation, the park containing the stadium and sports hall in Tessera, ironically, not far from the airport. The appeal to the administrative judge was Save, the airport management company of President Enrico Marchi together with a group of low cost airlines including Ryanair, Easyjet and Volotea. Save had complained of serious consequences on air traffic and a potential loss of 25 million in a year. But there’s more, Save had “suggested” the Municipality rather increase the additional Irpef for Venetians, already applied at most to citizens who mostly suffer from tourism and already pay good money to keep a city crossed clean every day by almost three times as many people as those who live there.
