This year, the memory of Don Italo Calabrò is even more significant, given the opening of the diocesan phase of the cause of beatification.

Priest of the poor, the least, the fragile, the excluded, among the founders of Italian Caritas, together with Don Giovanni Nervo, Don Giuseppe Pasini and Don Luigi Di Liegro, he was also its national vice-president. Don Italo knew how to be ahead of his time and grasp the signs of change: the choice of the poor and the promotion of volunteering in years when these choices were not without obstacles; his commitment to peace and non-violence, so much so that he was among the first in Italy to support and spread conscientious objection; the contribution of the Church for the South.

He worked to get as many children and vulnerable people out of institutions, also promoting the dimension of justice for the creation of more humane and adequate laws and services for reception.

He worked tirelessly with young people, those of his “Panella” first of all, the school where he taught for many years. Don Italo spent his entire priesthood in the diocese of Reggio Calabria – Bova at the service of the Church, having also held the role of vicar general.
