REGGIO EMILIA – He will appear before the Assize Court on July 5th Hadi Trabelsithe 23-year-old Tunisian arrested for the murder of Mohamed Ali Thabet. He is now in Piacenza prison and was in the courtroom for the preliminary hearing together with his lawyer Mattia Fontanesi.
Thabet had just turned 18 and was sleeping at the station in Reggio after spending months in a reception community for minors; he was killed with a stab wound on the night between 30 and 31 May last year on the first platform. Trabelsi admitted to having hit him after a dispute over a bicycle, claiming that he was under the effects of alcohol and drugs. But he always maintained that he didn’t want to kill him. The prosecutor’s office, however, thinks that it was voluntary homicide aggravated by futile motives. Yesterday, the lawyer Fontanesi asked for the abbreviated procedure, which however judge Andrea Rat did not grant. Hadi Trabelsi will in fact be tried with ordinary rite, before the Court of Assizes.
“I will however ask for the exclusion of the aggravating circumstance of trivial reasons – explains the lawyer – and the reformulation as manslaughter”. The prosecutor Giulia Galfano considered the qualification of voluntary homicide to be correct. Trabelsi was arrested on 14 July 2023 after a month and a half on the run. Releasing spontaneous statements, he said he fled to France because he did not have his residence permit in order. The 23-year-old, actually domiciled in Sassuolo, then returned to Reggio and found the police welcoming him at the station. According to his version, his intention was to hand himself over to justice while according to the prosecution he returned because he was being hunted by the French police. The trial will therefore begin on July 5th.
