Dear Mayors,

my letter reaches you, first of all, to wish you good work in the Municipalities in which you were elected: a job which, I understand, is not always easy. In each of your Municipalities there are more parishes and more priests with whom I hope a valuable collaboration will begin or continue on various fronts: on the educational front, where Catholic schools exist, after-school or summer centers and educational activities are created for the benefit of students, also foreigners; on the social front, where initiatives exist, through Caritas, S. Vincenzo, Migrantes and other Catholic associations, to protect the weakest, support the many families in difficulty, assist the elderly, treat addictions, welcome migrants, asylum seekers and refugees ; on the sports front, where there are parish sports spaces and structures for the benefit of children, young people and adults, with various initiatives; on the front of the protection of religious cultural assets – in particular our Churches – assets which, especially in the hamlets, which are increasingly uninhabited in our countryside, risk closing because living expenses can no longer be supported. Perhaps greater collaboration on these different fronts could further encourage the growth of the community, putting the common good, justice, subsidiarity and solidarity at the centre, fundamental principles of the Social Doctrine of the Church, but also of our Democracy. As the Church of Ferrara-Comacchio we will continue to be available to promote initiatives that will increase participation, culture and education, social solidarity and integration in the area.

While I wish all the newly elected mayors good work again, I thank those who have completed their mandate as mayor for the precious service carried out in these years of mandate.

Gian Carlo Perego

Archbishop of Ferrara-Comacchio

Abbot of Pomposa
