PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – Monte Pellegrino will have new lighting. A new high energy efficiency system that will replace the existing one, which is not functioning because it is obsolete and damaged by fires, with latest generation LED lamps, significant reductions in climate-changing emissions and improvements in safety conditions. The area of historical, naturalistic and tourist interest will thus be re-evaluated on the occasion of the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of the remains of Santa Rosalia.
The efficiency improvement intervention was strongly desired by the mayor Roberto Lagalla: it was arranged by the Public Lighting Office of the Department of Public Works, which drew up the executive project for a total amount of almost 800 thousand euros (799,465.07 own funds of the municipal administration) entrusting it to AMG Energia Spa. The works are aimed, precisely, at increasing efficiency by replacing the lighting fixtures along the axis via Pietro Bonanno-via Padre Giordano Cascini up to Piazzale Cardinale Salvatore Pappalardo and also providing for the change of the plant’s power system, previously connected to two cabins (Monte Pellegrino and Fiera 2).
The old system has not been in operation for some time: built in the 1970s, with series power supply and mercury vapor lamps, it is now obsolete, has suffered damage and was definitively put out of use by the fires that broke out in recent years in the Monte Pellegrino reserve and they interrupted the power supply in several places. The new plant will be built to replace the existing one and will be made more efficient in full respect of the historical-environmental-landscape interest of the area, which is subject to protection by the Superintendency of Cultural and Environmental Heritage. Precisely for this reason it is a particularly complex intervention, but also for the coordination that will be necessary to guarantee the vehicular flows towards the sanctuary of Santa Rosalia, which are very intense in this period.
AMG Energia has already carried out, together with municipal technicians, a series of inspections to verify the state of the sites and the situation of the existing plant and in particular the conditions of the poles and, on its website, has published an expression of interest for the contract works whose duration is set at 60 consecutive days, with work that must take place simultaneously in at least four different areas of intervention. The total renovation of the existing electrical system is planned, which is “in series” powered by the Monte Pellegrino and Fiera 2 cabins and which will be transformed “in shunt” powered by four electrical panels.
For this reason, limited work will be carried out for the passage of cables. The system will be made up of 350 poles: a part of the existing ones, still in excellent conditions, will be maintained and redeveloped, while those damaged will be replaced, all will be cleaned of vegetation and earth and the collars will be restored. The lighting fixtures will all be replaced with latest generation LED equipment with the expectation of a 60 percent reduction in consumption compared to old discharge lamps: the light points will be powered by an overhead line placed on a steel cable between pole and pole.
“Lighting up this place again means giving it back value and safety – underlines the councilor for Public Works, Salvatore Orlando – It is a sign of attention for the city’s heritage, not only the material one but also the immaterial one made up of faith and devotion to Santuzza” . “It is a gesture of care for a place dear to all the people of Palermo which identifies the city – adds the president of AMG Energia, Francesco Scoma – The fact that these activities are carried out by our company strengthens the bond between the subsidiary which has more than one hundred years of history, the city and its patron saint”.
