ANCONA – The following is a press release from CGIL Marche.

The number of employees is decreasing, the self-employed and women are increasing. It is the photography of the IRES studio
Cgil Marche on ISTAT data for the 1st quarter of 2024. The survey highlights that there are 631 employed people
thousand with an increase of 1% compared to the 1st quarter of 2023, a lower figure than
to the increase in Central Italy (+1.5%) and in Italy as a whole (+1.7%). The employment rate
of people between 15 and 64 years old reaches 66.2% (+0.5%). The increase in employment in
Marche is entirely attributable to the growth of self-employed workers (+11 thousand units, +7.9%)
while the number of employees decreased by 5 thousand units (-1%). A phenomenon not observed in the Center
and in the entire country, where both positions recorded an increase.

Eleonora Fontana, CGIL Marche regional secretary, declares: “We are concerned about the clear decrease
of employees; the phenomenon requires particular attention. It is evident that the
measures adopted so far by the Region and the fragmentation of European resources (PNRR and ESF) in
many small interventions do not determine the overall growth that, instead, occurs in
Central Italy and the country”.

At a gender level, there is an increase in female employees (+15 thousand, +5.7%) and at the same time
a decline in employed men (-9 thousand, -2.6%).
At the same time, the male employment rate decreases and the female one increases, with
a reduction in the gender gap from -16.4% to -11.2%.
The number of people looking for work remains almost stable in the region with -400
units, -1.1%. The decline is attributable to the decline in unemployed women (-11.9%) while men
unemployed increase by 14.2%.
Furthermore, in the first quarter of 2024, the decline in inactive people aged 15-64 continues (-4 thousand, -1.5% compared to
to the first quarter of 2023) which stands at 272 thousand units. What is decreasing above all are the forces of
potential employment (-6%), i.e. the component of the inactive closest to the job market. Those
who are not looking and are not available to work decreased by 1% and stood at 243 thousand
unit. The general inactivity rate drops from 30.1% to 29.6%.
Also in this case the decrease characterizes only the female component (-12 thousand, -7.1%).
Inactive men instead increased by 8 thousand units (+7.6%). Although women are characterized
from a higher inactivity rate, the gender gap narrows in a year.
