Banco di Napoli Foundation, protocol with Cnr-Isem for the valorisation of the archive’s documentary heritage

An important initiative for promotion of historical research in Southern Italy. Tomorrow, Friday 14 June at 11am, at the Banco di Napoli Foundation (Via dei Tribunali, 213), “Archiva et Studia Civitatis” is scheduled, the inauguration event of the Research Unit at Terzi (Urt) of the Cnr- Isem. To sign the memorandum of understanding Orazio Abbamonte President of the Banco Napoli e Foundation Gaetano SabatiniDirector of the Institute of History of Mediterranean Europe CNR, which includes cultural and promotional activities according to the dual Mediterranean and European perspective. «The presentation – comments Abbamonte – crowns a work commitment that the Foundation has pursued for a long time with Professor Sabatini. This is another important piece that has seen the Neapolitan institution strengthen its cultural dimension and commitment to research, following its ancient tradition which sees it as the custodian of an archival heritage unique in the world. Of this journey, the most significant stages were the inscription in the UNESCO world memory register and the very recent elevation to the status of an Italian cultural institution. I thus hope that a path is being traced that will also characterize the Banco di Napoli Foundation in the coming years, placing this commitment alongside its many others which see it strongly committed to social support and solidarity”. The Cnr-Isem and its research have been a point of reference for Mediterranean historiography for many years, from the medieval to the contemporary era. In the agreement stipulated with the Banco di Napoli Foundation, the Cnr-Isem aims to enhance the enormous documentary heritage of the archive and to bring together the best forces from the economic, academic, entrepreneurial, cultural and third sector worlds of the South to create a “Forum for the South”. «The establishment of a CNR Research Unit – ISEM at the Banco di Napoli foundation – he explains Sabatini – is the first example of close collaboration between the largest Italian public research body and one of the most important banking foundations in the country, based in the South. The idea was born from the need to relaunch history studies – especially the social and economic history of Southern Italy – from a Mediterranean and European perspective.”
