Waste, rubble, even asbestos sheets stacked in one mountain of 200 m³. An important operation to protect the environment was conducted by the Local Police of Monza who, during a normal patrol in an area not far from the city centre, identified a suspicious area which led to a decisive intervention.
Discovery and seizure
Through an open gate, the officers of the Via Marsala Command noticed a large area with a large accumulation of rubble and waste of various types. Thorough inspection revealed a uncontrolled waste disposalestimated at approximately 200 m³, coming from demolition and construction activities. This waste was placed on a dirt floor without any insulating element, contributing to a potential environmental risk.
Inside the area, the following were found: insulating material made of glass wool and rock, partly contained in big bags and partly deposited on the ground without covering. Bituminous sheaths out of use. Wood and iron. Unsorted waste. Eternit sheets, partly bagged and placed on pallets, all in the open.
Furthermore, an area with waste combustion residues, the nature of which is currently unknown.
Legal action and consequences
Following these discoveries, the area was immediately seized according to article 321 of the criminal procedure code (cpp). The owner, present during the inspection, was reported for uncontrolled storage of dangerous and non-hazardous waste, in violation of article 256 of legislative decree no. 152/06, and burning of waste deriving from business activities, according to article 256 bis of legislative decree no. 152/06.
The theses of the Local Police were confirmed by the judiciary and by the Judge for Preliminary Investigations (GIP), who validated the seizure of the area.
