After months of preparations the seventh Italian-led G7 will start on Thursday 13 June in the exclusive accommodation facility of Borgo Egnazia, in the province of Brindisi, in Puglia. For two days the area frequented mainly by tourists will see the participation of the heads of state and government of the seven Member Statesas well as the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission representing the European Union.

As per tradition, representatives of some states and international organizations invited by the nation holding the rotating presidency will also take part in the work.

The themes and guests of the G7 in Italy

From the war in Ukraine to the one in the Middle East, from artificial intelligence to economic security, energy transition and environmental protection. There are many issues on the table in the Apulian context even if the focus proposed by the Italian presidency is Mediterranean and Africa to focus attention on this area. The program includes six work sessions on: Africa, climate change and development; Middle East; Ukraine; Migrations; Indo-Pacific and economic securityin addition to the ‘outreach’ session with the Nations and international organizations invited on Africa, Mediterranean, artificial intelligence and energy. In Puglia, world leaders will also address the issue of frozen Russian assets to understand if there is room to use them.

The announcement came directly from the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a video message at the end of last April: Pope francesco will participate for the first time at the G7 to talk, among other things, about artificial intelligence.

“The G7 will face what many, and not wrongly, believe to be the greatest anthropological challenge of this era, namely the advent of artificial intelligence, a technology that can generate great opportunities but which also brings with it enormous risks, as well as inevitably affecting global balances”, declared Meloni.

Security measures at the G7 in Italy

Turned up to maximum security level on the occasion of the summit: with the presence of hundreds of leaders, authorities and representatives, the Schengen treaty will be suspended. The special measures mainly concern Savelletri, Fasano and Brindisi, but also some areas around the Fiera del Levante in Bari where the media center has been set up with around 1,600 journalists from all over the world.
