Lamezia Terme – “In wishing good work to the mayors newly elected or reconfirmed at the helm of the Municipalities of Amato (Saverio Ruga), Cortale (Francesco Scalfaro), Marcellinara (Vittorio Scerbo), Miglierina (Marco Torchia), Motta Santa Lucia (Ivano Egeo) , Pianopoli (Valentina Cuda) and San Pietro a Maida (Domenico Giampà), I urge everyone to have the common good as a point of reference which, as Pope Francis reminds us, ‘requires a commitment that gets the hands dirty’ and ‘only dirty hands know change the earth: justice is lived, charity is embodied and, united in the challenges, we persevere in them with courage’”. This is what the bishop of Lamezia, Monsignor Serafino Parisi, states in a note.

“Common good which is not to be confused with mere well-being which, when it refers only to material abundance “tends to be selfish, tends to defend party interests, not to think of others and to give in to the lure of consumerism. Thus understood, well-being, instead of helping, is the bearer of possible conflicts and social disintegration; having established itself as a dominant perspective, it generates the evil of corruption, which discourages and causes a lot of damage – he continues – The common good, however, is greater than the sum of individual interests; it is a passage from what ‘is best for me’ to what ‘is best for everyone’, and includes everything that gives cohesion to a people: common objectives, shared values, ideals that help to raise our gaze beyond individual horizons”. Best wishes for good work also to those who have been called to serve their community from the opposition benches. The complex and delicate task of those who are called to supervise the actions of those who govern is to be a nudge but at the same time to contribute responsibly and constructively to the development and growth of their territory, putting aside personal interests and positions pre-established. The hope is that, once the phase of the electoral ‘battle’ is over, in every reality peace will be found among all citizens and work will be done in full respect of the dignity of each one, looking towards the common objective which must be that of the growth of one’s own community, living as pilgrims whose journey “has always been risky, interwoven with trust and vulnerability. Those who undertake it must soon recognize their dependence on others.” For the principle of the Incarnation, according to which reality belongs to us and must be interpreted and served with the proactive and generative force of Christian hope, as a Church we cannot help but be alongside those who work in this sense and in full respect of the dignity of ‘man because, as Pope Francis urges us, ‘respect and love must also extend to those who think or act differently from us in social, political and even religious things, since with how much greater humanity and love will we penetrate their ways of see, the more easily we will be able to start a dialogue with them. Certainly such love and kindness must in no way make us indifferent towards truth and goodness. Indeed, it is love itself that pushes Christ’s disciples to announce to all men the truth that saves’”.
