One hundred years since the murder of Giacomo Matteotti, the commemoration in Brescia

The mayor Laura Castelletti, a good part of her council and some city councilors met this morning to commemorate Giacomo Matteotti on the 100th anniversary of his murder.
Right on the street that bears his name, the city administration placed a wreath of flowers, while a representative of the Socialist Party placed some carnations.

«One hundred years after that brutal crime we believe it is right not only to commemorate the victim of that violence, but also to remember political and moral stature of a personality whose legacy was fundamental to our democracy”, underlined the mayor Castelletti in her speech.
The secretary of the Socialist Unity Party Giacomo Matteotti he was kidnapped and murdered on June 10, 1924 at the hands of a fascist squad and his body was found more than two months later. The assassination was committed following the protest speech – pronounced by Matteotti in the Chamber of Deputies on 30 May 1924 – for denounce the violence and illegalities committed by fascists during the elections.

«He embraced the socialist cause from a young age – the mayor recalled -. He was convinced that only the improvement of the conditions of farmers, workers and less abject fringes could transform society and lead it towards a future of growth. Supporter of liberal democracy, far from communism and open opponent of fascism, he was a convinced reformist and denounced the squad violence.”
On Tuesday 18th at 6pm, at the Teatro Sociale, the Bar Association will dedicate a moment to the political and social history of Matteotti.
