Sanremo. The result of the European elections in Sanremo arrived in the middle of the night, which saw the clear prevalence of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party, at 35.80%, 7 percentage points more than the national average. Following this, the second formation of the City of Flowers is the Democratic Party, with its 17.21% (seven points less than the national average), perfectly in line with the result of the 2019 European elections.

While waiting for the administrative elections which will begin this afternoon from 2pm, there is a first worrying fact: the low participation of voters. Voter turnout stood at around 55.28%, a sharp decline compared to the 62.60% of the municipal elections in 2019. Although this year the competition for the direct election of the mayor of Sanremo was very heated, with over 400 councilor candidates lined up and three strong coalitions in the field, two centre-right and one centre-left, at the call 3784 votes missing for 2019.

European Championships 2024. Below, the results of the European elections in Sanremo, after the counting of the 56 sections. Brothers of Italy is the most voted party, with the 35.81%followed by Democratic Party at 17.21% and from Salvini Premier League at 12.51%. Forza Italia – Noi Moderati – PPE obtained 10.42%while the 5 Star Movement stopped at 8.05%. Greens and Left Alliance 5.80%.

Below the 4% threshold are United States of Europe and Action – We are Europeans, which obtained 3.31% and 2.86% respectively. The smaller lists, including Cateno De Luca’s Pace Terra Dignità e Libertà, collected lower percentages, with a respective 2.57% and 0.92%.

Comparison with 2019. The balance of power within the centre-right coalition has reversed, with Fratelli d’Italia exceeding 35%, as Salvini’s League did 5 years ago in its moment of electoral maximum splendor, when in Sanremo the Northern League broke through the 37%. The Democratic Party is stable at just over 17%. The 5 Star Movement did very badly, losing over 6 percentage points compared to 2019. The League is the third party in the city, at 12.51%, followed by Forza Italia at 10.42%. Avs is at 5.8%, up on 2019, when the greens and the left ran separately doing little more than testimony. The evolution of +Europe, United States of Europe is slightly increasing, a +1% not enough for the Bonino-Renzi group to overcome the barrier threshold.

Now, all attention is focused on understanding how these data could impact local elections. In 2019 as today, the centre-right area (FdI, Lega, Forza Italia) was around 58% overall. Yet, everyone remembers how the candidate of the civic coalition won in the first round Alberto Biancheriagainst the challenger to the leadership of the center-right parties, Sergio Tommasini. A scenario then very different from today’s one which sees the civic candidate continuing the outgoing administration, the lawyer Alessandro Magerrun with the support of Tommasini but without the PD symbol and followed from the left by the leader of the civic-progressive coalition Fulvio Fellegara.
