Jonas Kaufmann stars in David McVicar’s spectacular staging, under the baton of Antonio Pappano on the podium for Giordano’s epic historical drama about revolution and forbidden love in his latest production as musical director of the Royal Opera.

“Complete triumph. Twenty called artists and master.” With this telegram, the publisher Sonzogno communicated in March 1896 the overwhelming success of Andrea Chénier to the author of the libretto, Illica, who had managed to transform the biography of a French poet, victim of the French Revolution, into a fiery tragedy. In the drama, Chénier is an idealist, unprepared to face the plots of the Jacobin terror and in love with Maddalena, an aristocrat fleeing from the revolutionaries; the two, victims of Gérard, will remain united until their death. Urged by a text rich in historical details and with characters moved by extreme passions, the composer Umberto Giordano reused revolutionary marches, such as The Carmagnole, and wrote a cornucopia of magnificent arias and duets. Few operas have such a high number of memorable songs: One day, to the blue space, The dead mother And Enemy of the country these are just a few examples.
