BOLOGNA, 10 JUNE – You have to go back to the five-year period 1987 – 1992 to find Richard Wagner’s Tetralogy (The Ring of the Nibelung) in the programming of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna: the German composer’s masterpiece returns next 12 and 13 June with the prologue, The Rhinegold, and the baton of Oksana Lyniv, the first woman in the history of Bayreuth, the Wagnerian temple par excellence, to stand on that podium. Unlike that now remote project, the Manzoni Auditorium will host the four operas in concert form only, therefore without direction, scenes or costumes, over the course of two years with La Valchiria on the bill on 17 and 19 October and Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods during 2025. The Bolognese theatre, the first in Italy to stage works by Richard Wagner, therefore returns to represent what many consider a titanic undertaking (approximately 16 hours of music) entrusting it entirely to its musical director (more than thirty years ago the batons of Peter Schneider and Riccardo Chailly alternated, while the director was Pier’Alli) who had already opened the season last year with The Flying Dutchman: “The Rhinegold it is the beginning of a journey in which Wagner exposes his philosophy – explains Oksana Lyniv – With this monumental cycle the composer wanted to show man what happens when you sacrifice love for the lust for power”. The cast, almost entirely made up of German-speaking artists, includes The King of the Gods Wotan played by the baritone Thomas Johannes Mayer, and the dwarf of the Nibelung people Alberich sung by the bass-baritone Claudio Otelli. The orchestra, as usual, is that of the municipal one. The world premiere of The Rhinegold was held at the National Theater in Munich in 1869 by will of King Ludwig of Bavaria and not of the composer, who in fact considered, as the real baptism of the work, its subsequent representation as part of the entire Tetralogy who inaugurated the new Festspielhaus in Bayreuth in 1876.
