The MuDes – design museum – in Caltanissetta |

This is a particular private collection within the Sosta Visiva space of Liborio Di Buono’s shop. The words of the architect Leandro Janni from Nisse (regional president of Italia Nostra Sicilia

“In one of his last interviews Ettore Sottsass declared: «Everything is design». But what is design? Design is the discipline that deals with the design of physical, digital or conceptual objects, through the drafting of a project that combines functionality and aesthetics. Design responds to needs, solves problems, proposes solutions or explores new possibilities to improve the quality of life of human beings.”

The press release sent to our editorial staff was signed by Professor Leandro Janni, regional president of Italia Nostra Sicilia. The architect from Nisse continues: “But how can design be defined today? And does it still have to be defined? Or can we limit ourselves to saying that there is not one but many definitions, and that that’s okay, that everyone has the design they want, the design they deserve? Or can we say that ultimately the definition is nothing more than a question of specialization – of a market, of a professional profile, of a production sector, of an academic domain – and that in real life we can even do without it? Certainly, due to its operational, creative strength, its ability to act, design represents a field of fundamental forces for the transformation of society”.

In Caltanissetta, in addition to the museum-gallery of Palazzo Moncada, the diocesan museum, the mineralogical and paleontological museum of the zolfara, the archaeological museum, the Vare museum, the school museum, there is a small but great design museum: the MuDes , a peculiar private collection within the Sosta Visiva space of the Arredi Di Buono store.

Most of the objects exhibited in this museum belong to the Di Buono family, who have been working in the modern furniture and design sector for more than 60 years. In recent years the museum has been further enriched thanks to the research and dedication of Liborio di Buono, the owner and passionate curator of the exhibition.

Del Buono and Janni

The museum contains many of the famous, iconic objects of national and international design: objects created by masters of “Made in Italy” such as Achille Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Ettore Sotsass, Marco Zanuso, Enzo Mari; but there are also objects created by the great European masters of rationalist architecture and twentieth-century design such as Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe, Gerrit Rietveld, Charles Eames.

In short, the MuDes collects truly significant and seductive objects, furniture, images and documents. But it also contains common, simple but interesting artifacts. And useful. Objects which, with their functionality, have changed our habits and our daily gestures for the better.

“The MuDes of Caltanissetta is undoubtedly a space, a place of interest for those who love art, architecture, material culture and design. But it is also – thanks and above all to the generous and effective communication of Liborio Di Buono – a space, a place that can give a lot to schools and students who are interested in learning about an important cross-section of technology, art and modern culture” , concludes Janni.
