European elections, the vote in Sicily: Forza Italia first party, collapse of the M5S, here’s who the (probable) elected ones are

Forza Italia flies to Sicily, becoming the first party with over 23.6% of the preferences: more than double the votes obtained by FI-Noi moderates at a national level. The Azzurri score seven points better than five years ago when Gianfranco Miccichè led them and beat FdI by three points, which stands at 20.18%. The two parties won 43% of the votes of the Sicilians who went to the polls, with a turnout of 38%, the lowest in Italy after that of Sardinia.

Tamajo mister preferences

Edy Tamajo is leading the FI-Nm list: the regional councilor, close to the governor Renato Schifani, confirms himself as a superstar of preferences, with almost 118 thousand votes, even a third compared to the entire loot of FI-Noi moderates in the Island. Better than him, at a regional level, is only Giorgia Meloni, with 177 thousand preferences. The leader of the list Caterina Chinnici, sponsored by the leader Antonio Tajani, is only third with 30 thousand votes away from the first and behind Marco Falcone (Gasparri area), who loses the internal challenge with his council colleague Tamajo for the leadership of the party. Massimo Dell’Utri, the candidate on whom Totò Cuffaro’s DC cast its votes, comes in fourth place with over 65 thousand preferences.

M5s third force

The third force in Sicily is the M5s with 16%, but compared to five years ago (31.18%) Giuseppe Conte’s movement, which closed its electoral campaign in Palermo, loses half of the votes. The Democratic Party holds 14%, but it is 4 points below the national figure and 2 points less than previous EU consultations.
Despite the 7% achieved on the island, Cateno De Luca’s Libertà list fails to achieve its Brussels objective, garnering just 1.5% at a national level: Salvini’s Lega also scores around 7%, but 13 points in less than the 2019 European elections with the outgoing MEP Raffaele Stancanelli leading General Roberto Vannacci, who came second, by 10 thousand votes. The Greens and Left Alliance is close to 5%. All the others stop below the threshold of 4%: United States of Europe just above 2%, Peace, Earth and Dignity at 1.7%, Action at 1.4%, Popular Alternative at 0.5%. The performances of Matteo Renzi and Carlo Calenda were disappointing, the former received 11 thousand votes from the Sicilians, the latter 6 thousand.

The elected

On the distribution of seats in the Isole constituency, Giorgia Meloni and the outgoing MEP Giuseppe Milazzo are certain for FdI; Edy Tamajo for Fi; Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Lupo for the Democratic Party; Giuseppe Antoci for the M5s; Raffaele Stancanelli for the League; Ilaria Salis for Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra. A provisional list: Prime Minister Meloni should be replaced by Ruggero Razza, Pietro Bartolo should take Schlein’s place in the Democratic Party, while it will be necessary to understand in which constituency the seat will be awarded to Ilaria Salis.
