Umbria and its GDP: an analysis of productivity

Umbria, according to the analysis conducted by the Research Office of the CGIA of Mestre, is positioned in twelfth place in terms of daily GDP per inhabitant. Despite the growing doubts about the validity of GDP as an indicator of a country’s well-being nationit remains the main indicator used to measure the wealth of countries.

The latest study by the CGIA Research Office in Mestre highlights significant differences between the Italian regions and provinces in terms of labor productivity and GDP. In Italy, we produce a GDP of 5 billion and 8 million euros daily, which corresponds on average to 99 euros per citizen. Trentino Alto Adige leads the ranking with 146 euros of daily wealth per inhabitant, while Calabria is in last place with less than 58 euros. Umbria, with 84 euros, ranks twelfth, therefore below the national average.

The CGIA investigation explore also labor productivity, a figure obtained from the ratio between GDP net of direct taxes and the so-called standard work units, a uniform measure of the volume of work performed by workers.

Umbria yes classification in fourteenth place, the last among the regions of Central Italy, followed only by the regions of the South. Also in this case, the figure is lower than the national average. The province of Terni is positioned better, in 62nd place out of 107, surpassing Perugia by ten positions.

According to the institute, the performance of Umbria is mainly due to the lack of large companies in the area, with stagnant wages for years which influence consumption and limit investments in research and development.
