TREVISO – The objective is ambitious: to grow a urban forest widespread, furnishing the free spaces of squares, streets and roads with mostly potted plants carefully chosen by a professional. And it is not just an idea, but a project that is taking shape in the Ca’ Sugana offices. Mayor Mario Conte intends to select a professional to whom he will entrust the task of transforming the most characteristic and free corners of the city within the walls into green corners.
Urban forest, inspiration from the Biblical Festival
The idea was not born by chance, but from the result and excellent comments obtained from the transformation of Piazza Rinaldi, transformed into the stage of the Biblical Festival. With a clever mix of potted trees and street furniture, a generally empty square has found a dimension of its own. Also becoming a small oasis, weather conditions permitting, for Treviso people looking for a shady place to sit. And where, perhaps, to read a book. Well, the mayor really liked this image and asked the offices to develop a project that would involve at least the entire historic centre. In the meantime, the mayor has decided to maintain the decoration of the square until at least the end of June. Judging the setup “So beautiful that… it will remain for a long time”, he announced. «Thanks to the availability of the organizers of the Biblical Festival and the nurseryman Van Den Borre, the installation created in collaboration with the Benetton Studi Ricerche Foundation will remain until the end of the month. We like the idea of a green agora, of a green, tree-lined square that invites reading, dialogue and meeting. In the future we want this project to become widespread.” And so it will be.
The “posts” of bars and restaurants
In general, the intention is to furnish those empty spaces in squares and city streets with potted plants, even large ones, such as the trees positioned in Piazza Rinaldi. There are many points to observe: don’t take away space from the audience of bars, pizzerias, taverns and restaurants, not affecting the wealth of paid parking spaces, not going on a collision course with the Superintendence which, for a few months now, has raised the threshold of attention on everything relating to the urban furniture in historic centres. The first signal has already arrived in recent months, when the Superintendent who takes care of the architectural beauties of Treviso asked to move the classic horse carousel from Piazza dei Signori. For a few days it was taken to Piazza Borsa and then finally dismantled to await the next holidays and anniversaries. So it remains to be seen where he will reappear. But for Conte the idea of a widespread urban forest has all the characteristics to be able to work. The plants, like the furnishings, will in fact be mobile to avoid dangerous contrasts. The operation is scheduled to no cost: Ca’ Sugana intends to create a public tender by making free public spaces available to nurseries in exchange for street furniture. Formula, however, still to be perfected.
