LAMEZIA TERME All ready too in Calabria for the European elections: region called to vote today from 3.00 pm to 11.00 pm and tomorrow from 7.00 am to 11.00 pm. In the running, in the southern constituency, which includes Calabria as well as Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, there are also several Calabrian candidates. All the parties are on the field independently, because the electoral system for designating the Italian members of the European Parliament is proportional (at the end of the article the lists of the southern constituency).
The Calabrian candidates
In the centre-right camp, Forza Italia, with the governor’s input Roberto Occhiuto and the regional coordinator Francesco Cannizzaronominates the vice-president of the council Giusi Princiin the list headed by the national leader Antonio Tajani: there is also another Calabrian on the blue list, Riccardo Rosa, at altitude “We Moderates”. As for the Leaguetwo big names like the parliamentarian on the field Simona Loizzoand the president of the regional council Filippo Mancuso: Loizzo is number 2 on the Northern League list for the South, behind the general Roberto Vannacci, champion of the ultra-right. There is also another Calabrian on the League’s list, Santo Gagliardian expression of Orlandino Greco’s Idm, federated with the League. Brothers of Italywhich also has the prime minister as its leader in the Southern constituency Giorgia Melonirelies on the outgoing MEP Denis Nescito the young regional councilor Luciana De Francesco and to the regional manager Ersilia Amatruda. Center-left front, the Calabrian candidacies of PD I’m the former spokesperson for Sardines Jasmine Crystaland the former regional councilor Luigi Tassone: the journalist tops the dem list Lucia Annunziataand then the mayor of Bari Antonio Decaropresident of the Anci, and the outgoing vice-president of the European Parliament Pina Picierno. The 5 Star Movement in the Southern constituency the Calabrian economist, former president of the INPS, is running as leader Pasquale Tridicowanted by the leader Giuseppe Conte: on the list he is joined by another Calabrian, the municipal councilor of Marina di Gioiosa jonica, Giuseppe Nunziato Belcastro, out of the online selections. Mimmo Lucanothe former mayor of Riace, symbol of welcoming migrants, is the leader of Avs–Greens and Left Alliance, who is also a candidate in the Southern constituency Maria Pia Funaro, former deputy mayor of Cosenza who left the Democratic Party noisily and controversially. Then the centrists in their various components are in the running. In the list of Actionled by the national secretary Carlo Calendathe regional secretary of the party is running Francesco De Nisiregional councilor, Stefania Postorivo and Ramona CalafioreWhile Matteo Renzi and Emma Bonino with United States of Europe they are nominating, among others, the regional secretary of IV Nunzia Paese, Filomena Grecoformer mayor of Cariati, Pino Varacalliformer mayor of Gerace and president of FederSanità Anci, e Stefano Mascaro, former mayor of Rossano. As for other forces, in the field Cateno De Luca with his Freedom and Stefano Bandecchi who with his Popular Alternative is the Reggio municipal councilor Massimo Ripepi’s candidate. With the list Peace, Earth and Dignity by Michele Santoro then runs Sara Scarpullathe mother of the biologist Matteo Vinci killed by a car bomb in Limbadi in April 2018. For all these latter forces, the main unknown remains the threshold of 4%, affordable for many but challenging for all.
Retrospectives
A look at the 2019 European elections. On that occasion, as far as Calabria is concerned, the most voted party was the 5 Star Movement, with 29.4, followed by the League, which achieved 22.6%. The third most voted party at a regional level was the Democratic Party with 18.2%, then in order Forza Italia with 13.32% and Fratelli d’Italia with 10.26%. It is also worth highlighting the precedents regarding the turnout for the European elections in Calabria in the previous electoral rounds, with essentially negative data: in 2014 the turnout in the region was just over 46% (over 11 percentage points below the national average), and it would have even worsened in 2019, when the Calabrians who went to vote to elect Italian European Parliaments were even 44.03% (10 percentage points below the national average).
