PALERMO – The “Piero Majolino” Memorial will take place on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th Junean event dedicated to the former sports director of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, who died prematurely in 2020. Thirty crews have entered the fifth edition of the particular regatta.
The Memorial brings together culinary and competitive skills and will take the sailors, mostly lifelong friends of Majolino, from Mondello to San Vito Lo Capo (Saturday), for a transfer sail, and on the reverse route (Sunday), for the regatta with early handicap to compensate for the times between boats of different sizes.
The days of the “Majolino” Trophy
The sailing in memory of Majolino, who during his career at sea took part in more than ten editions of the Palermo-Montecarlo, winning two of them, will be divided into two phases. On Saturday at 10.00 the crews will depart for San Vito Lo Capobut not before receiving a “mystery box” with the ingredients to prepare two dishes, one assigned by the jury and one to taste, the “Commander’s dish”.
Sailors will have to prepare the dishes during the sailing. Then, as soon as we dock in San Vito Lo Capo, a jury that will count on the expertise of Pietro Adragna, protagonist of the eleventh edition of MasterChef, will evaluate the work of the chefs on board, before eating together on Saturday evening on the beach.
The second phase will be on Sunday, with the regatta starting at 10am.00. The boats will start from the starting line with the differentiated start formula. The slowest boats will be the first to hoist their sails, then the faster ones. The finish line will be placed in Mondello in front of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia. The winner will be awarded the “Piero Majolino” Challenge Trophy.
The memory of Piero Majolino
Among the boats at the start, three will see the participation of very young athletes from the competitive teams of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, the Velaclub Palermo and the SSD Palermo Sport, guided by their respective coaches. Particularly heartfelt for the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, the event in memory of Piero Majolino has been renewed for five years now.
Majolino, under the management of former president Angelo Randazzo, held the role of sporting director for eight years and with the current president Agostino Randazzo he played the role of bowman in many of the regattas in which they were protagonists together.
The “Piero Majolino” Trophy, organized by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia with the patronage of the Municipality of San Vito Lo Capo and the collaboration of Olio Barbera, Guzman – who will offer the wines – and CaroCavallo & Velasurf, is open to all yachts in the categories ORC: Regatta, Cruise/Regatta, Grand Cruise.
