TERAMO. Important discovery at the Bortolami campus in Piano d’Accio. During the expansion works of the veterinary medicine teaching center, which will be completed by the end of 2025, an ancient necropolis came to light. The burials can be traced back to the Iron Age and, pending further chronological elements, appear to be placed between the 6th and 7th centuries BC. The discovery of the necropolis was illustrated yesterday at the university by the rector Dino Mastrocolaby the superintendent Cristina Collettiniby archaeologists Absent Guild, Iolanda Piersanti And Alessandro Muccianteby teachers Paolo Coen And Alessia Colosimoby the rector of the d’Annunzio of Chieti-Pescara Liborio Stuppia via video link and by the head of delegation of the Italian Environment Fund (FAI) of Teramo Pietro Costantini.
Following the discovery, the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Teramo and L’Aquila requested the archaeological excavation of the entire area in order to fully reveal the burials. The University of Teramo, under the scientific direction of the Superintendence, has therefore appointed a group of professionals who are carrying out the excavation and recovery of the archaeological remains: in addition to the archaeologists Mucciante and Piersanti, in collaboration with the company Progeco srl, the restorer Laura Petrucci and the anthropologist Samantha Fusari.
So far, 13 circle graves, delimited by stones, have been discovered in two distinct areas separated by about 50 metres. In support of the burials, which refer to the Pretuzi people, ceramic vases of various types (symbol of the aristocratic banquet), iron weapons (for male individuals), fibulae and spindle whorls (for women) were found. Of particular interest is the burial of a child, who has an iron collar around his neck typical of children’s tombs and which finds comparison in the necropolis discovered a few years ago in Cona during the works on Lot Zero. The Superintendency has already started a process with the University of Teramo aimed at a valorisation agreement which will allow us to proceed with the museumisation of the finds in the university’s exhibition spaces, involving experts and students in the activity, and their inclusion in the programme. of studies in the museology course.
According to what was explained yesterday, the works for the completion of the veterinary medicine teaching center will not be slowed down. On Sunday 16 June, on the occasion of the European Archeology Days, it will be possible to visit the archaeological site of Piano d’Accio by booking on the FAI portal. Superintendent Collettini announced that in the coming months there will be interventions in Piazza Sant’Anna to enhance the excavations while it is still to be understood what can be done for the Roman mosaics in Via Sant’Antonio.
