Terni. The Prisciano committee deems Local Health Authority’s response to bad odors and agri-food products inadequate

After more than a month, the Prisciano Committee received a response from the local USL on the bad odors constantly perceived “in order to define the real risks and damages that these bad smells can have on human health and in particular on fragile subjects, pregnant women, the elderly and children”.

An answer that is judged by the committee itself to be evasive, or rather a non-answer.

“Only two days ago the (NOT) response from the ASL arrived – we read in a note released by the Prisciano committee – which lets us know that, on 29 March, an inspection was carried out by some technicians from the Prevention office who, having gone to the places where odorous phenomena were most frequent, did not detect the presence of bad odors. From contacts with some residents of the area they learned that the odor phenomena are more frequent at night and have been characterized as similar to “burnt rubber” or “sulphur”.

Does the procedure just described really represent constant and systematic monitoring, as we requested? Is this really all the attention we deserve? Even if these ‘bad smells’ are only noticeable at night, are they less important than those that are noticeable during the day? Why hasn’t a new inspection been carried out?”

“In the email sent on 26 April – we read again – we also asked the ASL for the reason for the absence, for years now, of monitoring of meat, eggs, milk and vegetables, despite the fact that the resolution of the former mayor Di Girolamo who banned cultivation in the area.

We also requested the immediate and systematic resumption of analyzes of meat, eggs, milk, vegetables and other agri-food products grown in the Terni basin and, in particular, near the AST steel plant.

We have not received any response on this aspect, in fact in the letter we do not read any reference to monitoring: neither the motivation for the suspension of this analysis activity nor any news regarding the possible resumption of controls.

We would never have expected such an inadequate and careless response and we honestly think we don’t deserve it.”
