Cars, motorcycles, but also home furniture, household appliances and so on. In Piedmont, over 6 and a half billion euros were spent on so-called “durable goods” during 2023. In Turin and its province almost half, with over 3.3 billion. This is stated by the Findomestic Observatory, which marks a percentage increase of 8.6% compared to 2022. A figure which is however lower than the national one (+8.9%) and that of the North-West (9, 3%).

Passion for used cars and motorbikes

Spending on used cars and motorbikes grew in the region by 20.5% (1 billion and 984 million euros) and 23.2% (178 million) respectively, slightly more than what happens on average in the North-West and in the case of used cars even more than the national average”, he comments Claudio Bardazzi, head of the Findomestic Observatory. “New cars are also growing (+13.4%, 1 billion 546 million), but to a lesser extent than the average in the North West and Italy, above all due to the limited growth of this expenditure item in the capital”, he continues. Good increase in purchases of household appliances (+3.9% 422 million) while furniture remains essentially stable (+0.7% to 1 billion 529 million). Reductions, as also happens in the rest of Italy, in consumer electronics (-27.9%) and information technology (-7%)”.

Each family spent around 3226 euros

Doing sums and divisions, it emerges that each Piedmontese family dedicated on average 3,226 euros to purchases of durable goods: a figure almost 400 euros higher than the Italian average. But then each province has its own story: Biella, for example, with 3,621 euros per family, ranks 2nd among all the Italian provinces in average spending per family. At the other extreme, Turin ranks 43rd (3,137 euros per family unit) in the ranking of the 107 provinces.

Tastes under the Mole

Right under the Mole, then, we discover that in 2023 the growth in spending was 6.8%, the lowest in the region but which at the same time represents more than 50% of all spending in Piedmont. Spending per family is also moderate, amounting to 3137 euros per household. On the mobility front, the used car sector approached one billion (998 million, +20.5% growth), with a performance above the national average. The people of Turin also showed a preference for two-wheelers, which reached a value of 87 million with an increase of 23.7%. The case of new cars is different, which with the only regional growth of less than 10% remained at a purchase volume of 744 million (+6.7%), a result which makes the capital record one of the worst performances in Italy in this segment (105th place out of the total of 107 provinces). In the home sector, families spent 226 million on large and small household appliances (+4.1%): the greatest increase in the region together with the province of Biella. Furniture also holds its own, with growth of 0.6% against spending of 826 million. Consumer electronics, on the other hand, suffered a decline, sliding to 55 million (-28.2%). In a similar way, information technology (-8.2%, 92 million) and telephony (-1.9%, 291 million) fell.
