‘Keep an eye on allocating funds for benefits’

Below is the press release from the military union Italian Calabria signed by the president Massimo Cristiano and the regional secretary Marco Paola on

The military union states in the note:

“We are obliged to return to the thorny question of tariff concessions on regional public transport for the Police Forces and the Armed Forces, sanctioned by the relevant law, i.e. article 7, paragraph 6-bis of Regional Law no. 35/2015, which was subsequently modified with the adoption of Regional Law n. 8/2023, dated 24 February 2023. This legislation allows members of the police forces (such as the Carabinieri, State Forestry Corps, National Fire Brigade, Financial Police, State Police, Penitentiary Police) and Armed Forces, including the Army and the Port Authority – Coast Guard, to benefit from a fare concession on tickets for local public transport services, which provides an 80% reduction compared to the ordinary fare. A useful measure also and above all for safety issues for citizens”.

The statement continues:

“In recent months, the national and regional leaders of the Union met with the Regional Councilor Antonello Talerico who had taken charge of “to unlock” a topic that had fallen into oblivion. Below is the official note from the Councilor himself and Trenitalia Spa which from 1st of June officially announced the entry into force of the relief for all sectors. Today the cold shower, we learn that the Calabria Region has not allocated the necessary funds, useful to finance the reference law. A real mockery for the entire Armed Forces and Law Enforcement sector.”

The statement concludes Italian Calabria:

“We as the Italian Union feel like apologizing to all the personnel of the Armed Forces and the Police Force, simply because we trusted the official notes issued by the regional and non-regional institutional representatives, who had publicly announced the resolution of the matter and the starting the service. We certainly couldn’t have known that the “lack of funds” was behind all this, we are shocked. We don’t want to put the cross on anyone, indeed we appreciate the commitment of the Regional Councilor mentioned above, but it is right that everyone knows the truth and today we feel cheated. We are not interested in who is responsible within the Calabria Region, we are interested in seeing this matter resolved, and we can only express the discontent among all the staff. For us soldiers, the sense of one’s word and honor are essential values, for this reason we ask Governor Roberto Occhiuto to take charge of the matter immediatelyimmediately allocating the necessary funds, filling the relevant regional law with content and meeting the needs of the Armed Forces and the Police Forces which certainly deserve completely different attention and respect”.
